Hi. This summer i am going to be fishing/camping on Isabella Lake plus other lakes nearby. I have only fished in the Gunflint area(Saganaga and Seagull) before so any information would be great. Tips on where, when, and how to fish this area would be great. Thanks a bunch! I'm looking forward to your responces.

Isabella has some great walleye fishing available. If you go down river there is a wide spot near Rice Lake that has northern pike.

A nice day trip (not fishing) can be taken on Island River south to go down and see the Indian petraglyphs (not pictographs).

Where exactly are those petroglyphs? Do you have a GPS cord? The river splits about 2 miles west of Isabella Lake, one branch heads north the other south. Which one leads to the petroglyphs? Are they worth going to see? Is there any good fish’n in that river stretch? A friend of mine said there are crappies on that stretch, but we never found them.

Isabella Lake is nothing like Sag/Seagull. It is shallow and stained. The walleye are not tough to find like they can be on Sag/Seagull. The walleye do run small in this lake (ave.=13"). I would suggest printing a copy of the lake map from the DNR website. Most of the lake is sand/muck bottom and the walleye can be found in 7 to 15 feet by paddling around with a crawler harness. There are some rock reefs that hold eyes also. Pitch jigs with leeches at these reefs or use slip bobbers when you locate where the fish are.

You can find them on the McKenzie map #19. By what it says on the map, it is somewhere around 91 16 (whatever that means, I do not know GPS 'lingo' :-)

John says they are pretty fair. He liked that this is such a different Indian artwork than the pictographs.

I believe that there may be walleyes in that part of the river too, like inbetween there and Bald Eagle. But maybe someone else here has been there and knows the fishing?
