I didnt think there were any fish in Ely.
DOH!
I get up there every opener for Walleye's and do fantastic. Fish for brookies too. Nice area up there. Been looking for a good Lake Trout lake up there outside BWCA. Besides Snowbank.

Ely Lake Expert...I have been to the lake a few times, but never put the boat in. I have a couple of buddies that fish it, but never heared many stories. How do you do on the walleyes out there?

Surface tension, I think I confused you. Ely lake is a couple of miles outside Eveleth, nowhere near ely. At least an hour from were you are thinking.

Alaskander, Honestly I do real well for walleyes on the lake, but I have lived here for 18 years and know where I am going. I know from top to bottom and one end to the other. I also know what to use out here. I will usually catch 4 or 5 and even sometimes limit out and in this lake when you catch a walleye it will be a nice fish. Personally I have never caught a walleye under 15 inches and I would say an average of about 19 inches. My biggest has been 8 pounds. I am still looking for the 10 pounder to put on the wall,(which has snapped my line a couple of times). The thing about Ely lake is that it has unbelievable amounts of structure and if you just go out one day and don't know where you are going odds are you won't catch any walleyes. Same type of deal with crappies, there are some nice ones, but you have to know where to go. Ely lake can be frusterating, but if you want to try to catch some hog walleyes, I would recommend to at least give it a try. It took a while to find em. Since I have found there patterns I love fishing here. In my opinion 3 or 4 big ones is better than 10 tiny ones on alot of the other lakes around here

good luck if you try it.

Ely lake expert...So many lakes, yet so little time! Don't think I will be on Ely lake anytime soon, but thanks for the curiosity resolver! Good luck in the future and if you get a chance chase those crappies around more often, real nice ones out there, I am sure you know that.

ely lake expert. My daughter lived on evelth with her boyfriend and used to fish Ely lake almost every day from a canoe. Not much on Walleys, but some realy nice large mouth bass. I tried it a couple of times not much luck, I thought the water was to clear to do any good during the daylight hours for the eyes I must have been mistaken. Any hints on where to fish the lake going out of the public launch??

I lived on the lake for a winter while i was going to school at the tech school.... classes and work kept me pretty busy not much time left for fishing. I did get some nice walleyes and crappie though. send me an email if you ever want some one to fish the area lakes with, I live in buhl now and cant always find a willing fishing partner. my email is [email protected]

Loadmaster, you are right about the bass, there are some monsters in there. The water clarity does also make it tuff so I usually don't go out for walleyes until 30 min. to an hour before dusk, unless it is a very cloudy day. Then they can be caught. As far as good spots are concerned it kinda depends on the wind direction and I usually don't say anyways. The one thing I will tell you is that I caught my biggest walleye 15 feet in front of the public access dock at 5:00 p.m.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
