The st. louis is a great spot...best day last year was 92. From the opener until the first of august...and sometimes later...I pretty much caught 30-50 eyes a day and sometimes more, but thats the average. Thank god for the two fish limit. I wish they would put special regs on for northerns...I think it could really be good for big ones if they put a 30-40 inch slot on it...same for chequamegon bay..but I digress.

Walleye 10...Never even considered that maybe, just maybe... there might be a similar spot that resembles yours on the mighty St. Louse R. hey? I have had excellent days on that river, but I found enjoyment and superior fishing on LOW.
I realize that we are products of our environment and in most cases it is enjoyable to say hey! "Killed them on the river tonight.

Great fishing all of you guys. It is fun to hear what's happening in your neck of the woods

walleye10, I agree that the St. Louis River is definitely a world class fishery. We fish it a lot, but also have fished many other places including LOW, Erie, Saginaw Bay and many others. Just check out our league nights to see some of the eyes from the river. Goto www.fishingwebmaster.com/tgif and you'll see that early in the season also every team scores a limit on the river in 3 hours. We also have had several 8-12 pound walleyes in an evening and that's during the league hours also. We are a small group of boats but with this kind of fishing to be enjoyed we go for it. The competition has helped us all increase our skills.

But back to the walleyes per day, I have had 3 days over 100 eyes personally on the River. I do not fish LOW much but with this great fishery in the back yard, I can spend more time fishing and less time driving. Plus the saved gas money goes into more fishing gear.

Have a great day and better fishing,
Doug

Hey doug can you give me the info on your Mon. night fishing league? My fishing partner and I think it would be fun to meet some new faces and learn more about the river. If you want to you can send the info to [email protected]. Thanks in advance.

I've always heard good things about the St. Louis. Being unfamiliar with the area, I'm not sure where to put in. Anyone willing to help a sportsman? Much appreciated!

Slowfinger there are several places to put in. Starting on the lower bay part of the river. I like the Barkers Island boat launch because its long and deep, any size boat easily can come in and out. Fee launch though and its $3-4 depending on if your a Wisc. resident or not.
Next would be loons foot I believe its called. THis one is under the high bridge and it also is a good landing. Free launch and good parking.
Going up the river is another Superior Wisc. fee ramp called Arrowhead Pier. OK parking, the launch is shallow but ok for smaller 12-18 foot boats.
On the Duluth side is Smithville landing wich is free and is another smaller landing. This is good access to what is known as Spirit Lake wich is a widining of the river and is almost always a good area to find walleyes. Stay with the markers because it can get real shallow in spots.
Up farther in Gary New Duluth is Boy Scout landing wich is probably the most popular landing of them all. First three weeks of the season you will park miles away if you arent there by sun up. Free access and its fairly deep and good for anything up to about 18 foot. The T dock is always bussy at boyscout for those without boats.
Last landing is at Fon Du Lac campground in MN. This is a small campground and the landing is very small. Only 1 dock and early in the year this is VERY busy. This is the closest access to the 23 bridge and you cant fish above it until the 19th of May I believe to protect the spawning walleyes. I usually camp out here for the opening of the 23 bridge so we can go up to the **** and fish. I recomend this area for the first 2-3 weeks and then we slip down the river gradually winding up in the bays around the 1st of June.
Hope this helps but if you have ? just post them and we will do our best to help you out. Northlander.

Northlander,

Don't forget about the landing on the Minnesota side on Port Terminal down by UPS. I have seen some pretty good sized boats launched there. Alot of guys put in there and go out on the Big Lake!!! Not far to go,free, and good landing.

Good Fishing To All !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ludy,
The Walleyes in the spring are coming out of Lake Superior. You can tell them from a river walleye because they have a white belly. Yes we eat them. Beer battered and deep fried you won't find better.

Good luck

I guess we will be able to tell who you are if I ever see you, you will be the one glowing in the dark. If there are then number of fish in the river, with white bellys, that the lake must be so full the lake trout and such would not have a chance. Just kidding

Boy I would like to tell the whole world about the St. Louis River , but I don't because there too many people fishing the river as it is. Most of the new people that have never fished the St. Louis Don't know what they are doing anyhow . And most of all they come with their big boats and big moters and drive 50-70 MPR. up and down the river channel. This is a very unsfe act, And it makes us local folks mad. So if you are this type of fishermen GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Jayman if it was me I would be on the St.Louis River up below the bridge and the many spots below. Cast out 1/4 oz. jigs or toss stickbaits.
Also the spots off of 131 ave. west in Fondulac are also good. Minnows always seem to be best early in the season. Good Luck!

Gary,

I agree with you that there is a lot of boats that drive like maniacs up and down the river. With the 2 fish limit I don't really see a problem with new people seeing for themselves what the river has to offer. I think the biggest problem on the river is all the people that fish right in the chanel
making it difficult to move to various locations.

Good Luck

You are correct. When the river is only 50 ft. wide and you get 3 boats trolling side by side it just goofs things up for everyone.
I think trolling should be outlawed north of the Fondulac bridge at least. Theres just too many people and too many guys who troll right up the center leaving little room for those trying to get up or down the river. Not to mention the mortality rate of the fish when guys drag in walleyes across the top of the water with 3 trebles barried in them. Trolling is great in the bays etc. or when all the people are gone but not up by the dam with100 boats anchored in there. MY opinion of course. Im sure Ill get plenty of others.
