Me and a group of guys are planning another trip to canoe country and I think this year we are focusing strictly on fishing as much as possible. We are going to start off out of Fall Lake and then work our way up to Basswood for a few days. I know this is a big area but do any of you reccomend any spots or presentations? We are heading up for the last week of May and into the first weekend of June. Smallies, Wallies, and Northerns are our main focus. Last year we had really good luck using slip bobbers and leeches, what do you guys think? Any little lakes that we should stop and fish? Thanks for any help.

The last 2 years we were camped near Caribou Point on Basswood and had a great time! We fished that point and the islands just to the north. At that time my fireball jig and minnow outfished white and chartruese. Leeches worked o.k., but we had betterluck with minnows.

Both years we had our best success right off our campsite around 7pm until about 1/2 hour after sundown using lighted slipbobbers, then another run seemed to come in just before midnight with 4 small walleyes caught.

Tried for some northens, black and white Daredevils worked best. But had more success using a Large sucker minnow and bobber and quick strike rig from our campsite in about 8 to 10 feet of water. Caught and released a 39"er and a 33"er. And lost another large one to a snapped line. Dacron sinks, thus it gets lodged in the rocks and snapped by wearing on the rocks. Switched to Tuff Line.

Didn't find the smallmouth either trip. Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Rob

Me and a group of guys motor into basswood every memorial weekend. Jigs and minnows will be your best bet. That lake has lots of good honey holes. Just bring a portable fish finder and look for nice structure.

If you can't or woun't bring electronics, let the shoreline show you transition areas.
Gravel to sand..lg rocks to small...what you see on the shore carries into the water. These areas hold the bait/food which in turn brings in the predators.
Seabass is correct, many good spots on that lake. Every bay is like going to a different lake!
I can't wait until June - nunzio.

Robert--

Were you using live minnows or salted minnows? If live ones, did you use a fish trap to catch them up there? If you don't mind what is your email address? I wouldn't mind talking some more and possibly getting a few more details on campsites, etc from you.

Thanks
Jason
