Since about a week and a half after opener, I can't seem to find them. I have been vertical jigging with a Fathead.

Anyone else having any success?

What presentation?

What depths?

Thanks- Brandt

WalleyeWeasel-

Are you fishing under a float, or just pitching it in from deeper water to not spooke them?

Thanks- Brandt

Hey River Rat -

We found the walters last weekend anywhere from about 10 to 22 fow in the Chisago area. We started catching them in the afternoons in 20-22 fow, then moved in shallower down to about 10 fow after dark. We really didn't try shallower than 10 - we would have gotten into some pretty good weeds.....but, I'm sure they're in the weeds!

We were doing best with a fathead on a live bait rig with colored hooks and beads (no spinners) during the afternoon, and switched over to a leech and jig at night vertical jigging or slip-bobbering.

I haven't made it out since Monday - so not sure if this is still the ticket or not.

I pitch a jig around the weed line but the weed line is bordered by deep water. Now I'm thinking the bigger ones are a little deeper. I catch em on slip bobber when i need a break. I'd much rather work a jig than watch a float!! I trolled around till i found them then i anchored right on the weed line.

The crappies were on a float but it was only set at about 9"

they were feeding on the surface, in the weeds.

Hope that helps!!

Ice conditions varied on Saturday. 6" to 12". There is a pressure ridge to look out for. I saw guys with 1/2 ton trucks and fish houses all over. We chose the ATV to get around. Still to early for trucks in my opinion.  We caught fish but definitely had to stay mobile.

I use the Clam Ice Armor--the ones for about $69.  Not great for dexterity but the warmest I have found.  Get a good muff like Cabelas sells with thinsulite and puta few hand warmers inside.  Work well and keep hands moderately dry. Or, get goretex/thinsulite mists and put a hand warmer in each one.  They slide off easily.   Haven't tried electric.

Fished the SW corner today about 2 miles out. Lowest amount of ice I found was 10" and a few spots well over 20". Before anyone gets too excited I'm pretty sure these spots were where the ice push up on itself or below itself. Rough ice in general. Marked a lot of fish, tried everything and eventually got a few at dusk on a dead stick and a spoon. No big cracks but a few about half a foot and completely open. Nice to get out but was a long walk out and back.

Well I wish you guys would do it after walleye closes. The last few years you guys have done it on the final weekend of walleye  so some people won't do it . Cats don't close so you can do it whenever you want.
