Thanks!!!! to captain fonz for getting me on a fish that went a little over 20 (1st during season) and not a little under! The battle was absolutley awesome. It was a good choice to head to monti. Raining like crazy so a foggy picture. Second picture is a nice 19 1/4 incher from an hour or so later. Fonz got a dandy 19 but wants a bigger one for a picture. Adam got some nice fish also. All in all a fantastic day! Nice to see you again KT and thanks for the cold one!

Those are some nice pics... and is that a white buzzbait I see in that pic? wink.gif LOL

Too bad I wasn't up there this weekend... well actually I am glad because I hit Lake Harriet today (an old college days favorite) and had my personal best largemouth 21.5''! She was thick and full of eggs, probably around 6+. That lake usually has a bunch of small fish, but never fails to produce at least one big fish a year for me in the few times I still head back there. Sorry no pics though mad.gif I was wading the shallows and minimized my load to what I could carry in my wading vest (which of course means no camera). I did have the tape measure and got an accurate measure and snapped a shot from my camera phone but if anyone has ever had to hold your fish out and snap your own photo - you know it doesn't turn out very well... oh well - I'll just have to go back and catch her again tongue.gif

Nice job eyeguy.... That puts the honorable smallie magnet in your hands until someone else gets one over 20" from the river. Way to go my friend!! grin.gif

HT my son and I got out on Saturday for a few hours and I honestly don't know how many fish we caught. I seriously lost track. I do remember catching several that were in the 18-19" class though. Either way it was a good time, Thanks HT.

EG, Should we tell Fonz about our plan? You know, install defective troll battery so he has to pilot the big motor while ya whack the smallies.... grin.gif

Very Nice Fellas....

HAd to post a photo or two of the kiddo... My son was using an HT spinner BTW and managed a couple of nice fish with it. Keep in mind he is 8 and yes that is a baitcaster in his hands.... Can't tell I am proud.... smile.gifsmile.gif

Don't forget who got him into baitcasters SH.....

Yes, the infamous 21 inch smallie slaymaster, Brandon. grin.gif

Great pics!

I was telling a couple other FM'ers today that Braden and Brandon should team up in the Sartell tourney this year. They might just put a lot of adults to shame with their baitcaster slingin' abilities.

Oh EG,

Why did you have to go getting a 20?

Now I am the last human on earth without a 20........ frown.gif

Actually BLB, I was agreeing on our sons ability to show up some of the folks in the Sartel tourney.... But, if you want me to rub in the lack of a 20" smallie... shocked.gif well. What can I say. Must mean I need to get you out there so you can eh? grin.gif

See that way you could blame it on me for not getting you to the right areas.... LOL

Fonz - we'll get the 22 at the smallie magnet event... just as long as mine is a 1/4'' longer so I can get the magnet title tongue.gif. I can't wait for the 25th to get here already. This high water should still play a role in this years event! Last year, the water was so clear you could watch the smallies come up and nail your bait - this year will be a different story. Rain Rain go AWAY!!!

Bring on the pics!!!!!!

To catch a few over 20 inches at your age is an accomplishment!

If you didnt know, the DNR has never seen proof of a smallie over 21 inches on the Mississippi River from St Cloud to the Coon Rapids dam in 35 years of data they have collected.

Thats why we make a big deal of it. They are more rare than the albino buffalo. crazy.gif

You should be proud!

Well basskid to me it is a big deal cuz I have been after a 20 inch smally for a few years. I've managed to get many between 19 and 19 7/8 but finally got one at 20 1/4. To me catching a 20 inch smally is like shooting a pope and young deer with my bow. Now a 22 incher would be like shooting a boone and crocket grin.gif. Anyway I wish you happy fishing and congrats on catching and I hope releasing some dandy smallies.

congradulations, and when you said releasing smallies dont worry i havent kept one yet this year so far my total is up to 54 bass this year and i just got my second 21 for this year today. I caught it from shore, it was sitting in the mouth of a creek, which make great spots to fish when the water is this high. I took a couple pics but dont know how to get them hear. So if you could tell me how i will try. I love fishing for smallies and it is great being able to get up in the morning and go fishing right out side my door. There is a state record in here somewhere so keep fishing.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
