I didn't know them, but I think they're from Alex. They seemed like nice guys, I'd guess 30ish give or take. They had 31+ pounds, 18+ on Sunday. We were a half a pound ahead of them after Saturday, but they clobbered them yesterday. We finished with 22.65, which put us second.

I heard they caught them casting cranks, bobber fishing, & pitching jigs. I don't think all of those things are true, but stories get mixed up. I didn't ask them. I know a couple of teams did well on redtails yesterday. They weren't available locally to my knowledge, although we didn't try too hard to get them. I'm quite sure the top 3 teams didn't use them.

We caught ours on crawlers, as did many other teams that placed. It was a tough bite. We've caught more fish & had better weights in that tourney before & not done near that well.

Congrats Rodd & Greg, we didn't fare quite so well, had three fish sat, none sun. The winners were fishing very shallow, and I heard one guy was from Freeport and the other from St. Michael.

E. Martin,

Thanks, yes I heard that they fished very shallow too. Not to be rude, but do I know you? What I mean I guess is did I talk to you at the tourney? If not, we'll have to try to introduce ourselves next year assuming you're fishing again. Sorry you had tough luck. We weren't by any means thinking we were really on fish & going to do well. We figured we'd take some fish, but you never know how the rest of the guys are doing, other than guys fishing near you that you maybe can see take fish, or not take fish.

I was in the tourney and we managed to catch 9 fish. Only could weigh in 2 of the 9. Bummer

Were you in the Lake Assault tiller boat? If so we talked to you a little bit on the lake. It seems like it said fishin magician on the boat, so I assume that must have been you.

I think we caught 15 walleyes & 10 measured. They definitely weren't very turned on.

Actually I was in a Lund Boat. Here I have the username fishin magician and then I head out to the tournament and some guide has copied my name. Or vise versa. I was not in the lake assualt but man did you see the Shark out on the lake this weekend?

Yes, I don't think I'd want that thing to come after me. It did look like a pretty seaworthy boat, kind of plain inside though.

Did you guys bring home a check? It was tough fishing. Rumor that was going around stated that most fish were caught very shallow.

Yes, if you look back on this thread you'll see the info in one of my posts. Let's just say for once I'm trying to figure out how to spend a pretty decent check.

The fish were taken shallow, some really shallow & some shallower than that... Our fish on Saturday weren't really too shallow (15-18'), but Sunday they were. I heard the winners were the really shallow ones.

I am one of the guys who won the Lions tourney! I am from St Michael and my partner is from St Joe! Upon reading all the prior posts everyone is correct about how we caught our fish! The good news is I never knew Osakis was such a GREAT walleye lake for numbers of fish and the size of fish! We did have a blast catching all those fish! I can't wait to try it this fall or yet this summer again!

Good luck to everyone!

Congrats walleyes29, I shook your hand then when they were taking all of our pictures for the paper. I was the guy in the Fleet Farm shirt if you happened to get a picture that had the top three teams in it.

Someone said one you guys are related to the people than own Trophy's. I don't know them, but is that true?

From what I know I don't know that there would normally be walleyes where I heard you caught your fish, with the lake being about a foot above normal. You guys did a great job of finding a bunch of active ones. We were just able to eke out a few more fish then the other teams, we by know means pounded them.

I believe my partner is related to the owner of Trophy's!

I also think those walleyes will be there all year long, in fact in other minnesota lakes I have caught walleyes in the same type of locations! Even with the high water I really think those eyes will stay put all year as long as baitfish are around!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
