Merc won't charge battery?

John Mickish

Question

I've got an 88 Merc 90hp three cylinder that dosen't charge the battery. Any quick easy things to look for or is the stator shot?

I've got a voltmeter hooked up to the battery to monitor the charge and it dosen't go up when running, it just stays around 12 volts and I charge it when I get home.

I dont know for sure but isnt there a voltage regulator of some type, if there is I would check that first but I would check with Val on this web site I think he has those mercs dialed in.

Stator is not the problem on this motor, you probably have a bad rectifier, which is what charges battery.

I wish I had one here with same setup, but mine is newer and I believe they changed type so I cannot show picture.

Send me serial # , I will lookup Mercury parts express and show you what is it.

It will be an expensive item, or if you can have a mechanic test it, it would be better.
