Ripple:

I don't know you but I'm already jealous. Woman Lake area is God's Country! I've got a place on a small lake up near Mann and I love it up there, can't wait till Monday and I'll be up there!

Beware: this site IS addicting, I've read so much on this site in the last year or so it's sad. My boss would be pissed!

Looks like the deadminnowcatcher is going to come out of his fishing shell in a couple of days and finally wet a line- Hope the big ones are hungry. Might even have a couple of small minnows left to put back on that dock that we stole them from last year. wink.gifwink.gif

Ripple,

First of all, welcome to FM!

I also have a place on Woman. What bay were you fishing in Saturday evening? If you were going after the eyes, I bet we were in the same area! We actually did pretty well. My 2.5 yr old son caught a 5 - 6 lb eye on a scooby doo rod. Actually Grandpa had to reel it in for him. It was pretty cool, we thought we were going to lose her because the drag wasn't working so there was some stress on the line.

It is a great area up there. I wish I could spend more time there.

I wanna give Government point a chance at night! Never really tryed it. Ripple you should give her a shot and then give us a report. But thats only if the lake is calm grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif Seriously though, you should! Matter of fact, you should steal some of those minnows back and give them a shot! grin.gif

Diesel D, Where are you on Woman. grin.gif

(Hopper......GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER!) grin.gif

Scoobie doo and Snoopie make great rods. When I was a kid (still am) I used to use that fiberglass rod to wack frogs with then use em for bait. That old rod lasted for years. Still dont know what happened to it? frown.gif Anyways congrats to your boy! bet he was happy!

Ripple and HoleHopper,

We are in Lantern Bay (just down the shore from Bungy). I am sure you know where Lantern Bay is, every night you will see at least 10 boats out on the ridge from 5ish to 10pm or so.

It is amazing what a few feet difference in depth can make on an evening of fishing. I am not saying we are always right, but Saturday evening we were. I probably shouldn't tell you this (but you are fellow FM'ers) so I will. We were in 23' of water and fishing within a couple feet of the bottom. Some of the people around us were higher up on the ledge (around 15' or so) and had no luck using the same tackle.

Too bad the Liquor store moved out of the Muni(sp?). Now it is a little walk from the city docks to pick up some Pop.

Ripple, do you live up there year round?

confused.gifCan either of you tell me where government point is? Is that the point out by the narrow area going into Broadwater?

Good luck fishin'

Hi Icelander--we spend from May 1st to Oct. something here and then go south for the winter , but have been here for 24 years. Actually have dome more fishing in the past, when we were here for mostly weekends and vacations than now when we live here. Gov. point is the point when you leave the Gold coast heading into town and there is boeys there to warn you about rocks.. Haven't been to the muney yet this year.. Make the kids stop at Sam's Club in St. Cloud on the way up for our "pop"..They almost needed a trailer the last time they came wink.gif....Anyway, this year the weather has been so cold and rainy that the few days of decent weather we have had, we just fished out front in Bungey Bay.. From past experience we have found that if they are biting, we do just as well there as anywhere on the lake.. Maybe not as many, but they are bigger--happy fishing

Ripple, First question- Who is Icelander?......... Do you mean Diesel D??....... tongue.gif

Second question- Hopper JR. wants to know if he can come up for a weekend to fish the pond while his parents play hookie and go to Red Lake for a day or two or five??? Heck, for that matter, How does a month of 'quality time' with Jr. sound? shocked.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Diesel, 22 ft. sounds about right! 22 has been the best historical depth to find em in on woman and is no secret. We know where lantern is but dont know what you meen by the ridge. but next time im up I will just look for the boats and hopfully find it. You dont need to describe where for abvious reasons. If it is where I think it is, peaple do very well there in the fall for a couple of weeks.

HoleHopper,

Maybe "ridge" was the wrong term. I just mean an area where it goes from 22 up to 10 - pretty quickly. Sorry for any confusion.

Good luck fishin'

D

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
