Well, the much anticipated report is as follows:

1.) Weather in late May is certainly unpredictable

2.) Horseshoe resort has built one heck of a new lodge and we were privileged to have rented the entire thing. For those looking for a place to stay, give Clark and Elaine a call.

3.) Fishing with the Colonel and Jones was a treat, Colonel put one in our party on a 28 and a 26 walleye in the worst weather I've seen in my 4 years up there. The walleye were released by the way, to continue to support the cass lake fishery system.

4.) Was able to meet CFD and his crew, sorry they had to leave so soon. Not sure what happened on that end but certainly hope everything has worked out.

5.) The mushroom swiss at the Pike Hole was as good as ever, we were fortunate to be able to continue eating there after one of our party had an irresistable crush on one of the waitresses. Needless to say, she was not near as excited about the potential relationship as my fellow Texan.

6.) Sure is relaxing to get amongst friends and dang good people up there, I cannot tell you how nice things are over at the Horseshoe. Have yet to ask for something that they do not provide and believe me we ask for quite a bit of stuff.

Sure I'll have more to add in the next few days, feel free to ask any questions. Fish location questions will need to be directed to the Colonel and Jones, Texan does not give away where we were cool.gif

Don't ask - don't tell?????

Sorry to hear about the weather but it still sounds like some great memories were made.

Did the Mepps work at all?

Minnesota, just isn't the same without the Texan & his group. I give you a lot of credit, coming from 90 degree temperatures and fishing in cold, windy, rain was impressive. You guys are to be commended. Thank God you had enough antifreeze and great food to keep you going.

Nice seeing the crew, think about next year when it will be WARMER.

Paul sure put it on all of us one day then came back to earth the next day...guess that's why they call it fishing instead of catching.

Thanks for helping us out Paul, enjoyed meeting you and will catch you again next trip up, looks like we are now coming the second week of June next year.

Yep, 2nd week of June next year. I knew I could convince you to see it my way. We better plan on 2 weeks in 2006 so we can get some actual fishing done in addition to all the bsing.

Shining up my Mepps tonight...14 days until liftoff.

Thanks for leaving some in the lake for us.

Tired of the weather issues and unpredictable fishing. Man, you need to get over to the Shoe and check out the new building....awesome!!!!

Not sure Gene what color will work when you are there but yellow and green were hot. Yellow #5 aglia with yellow hair caught a 38 inch muskie while trolling for Pike. Fish was released as not in season but we would never keep one anyway.

Be nice next year to actually fish for Muskie and bass....

Texan,

We have done ok casting plain Silver Mepps or Yellow baits similar to Mepps. Never have tried Green before so thanks for the tip. Were you trolling Cass or Kitchi? and how deep?

As far as fishing bass, we don't do much in June but we do like to go into Windigo to try at least one day a week. And in Allen's bay we run into a few on our bobbers once in a while. Never fish musky at all - don't have the patience.

Largest pike came from trolling the NW side of star island. Tried kitchi and cass and caught them in both lakes

Graham and I worked our arses off one afternoon throwing everything we had in the boat at weedlines in 6 feet of water. Had numerous fish follow the dang lures right up to the boat and never a hit....nothing a shot of captain morgan and a prozac didn't cure cool.gif

Very frustrating at times for sure. We call those followers "swimmers". Capt cures all I hear.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
