I'm heading to the Washington Island area next Friday and will be taking my wife up for her first trip to the area. I would imagine the Walleyes would be on the reefs close to deep water and leeches and crawlers should be the ticket.

Does anyone have any advice?

I would really appreciate it because I really want to get the Mrs on to some fish......(and would like to catch a few myself). I have never been there at this time of the year and would appreciate any help I can get.

The guys and I were there in early June. For me it was the first time in about 12 years and it was the first time for the rest of them. I managed to catch a 27" Walleye that is still living there, plus we had plenty of eating size fish for camp. It sure was great to get back to the area again! (I've been busy raising babies and have not had much time for fishing for a long time)

It is also nice to know the Forest Service is back to allowing camp fires again! There is alot more to fishing than the fishing! - The last trip we had a cow and calf moose swim by us while fishing one evening in Wind Bay!!!

Thanks in advance for any help,

Duckslayer

Duckslayer,

You should be able to find fish, but don't expect any monsters jumping in your boat. Northern, and Bass will be plentiful; but the walleyes are a whole 'nother story. You'll find some on the reefs, using as you stated leeches and crawlers; but walleyes are really picky this time of year. At least on Basswood lake they have been. I went up there 3 weeks ago, and only caught 1 limit (2 guys fishing). Not that great.

Good luck!

Duckslayer, I just got back from the Boundary Waters today, and although the weather was great for swimming and smallie fishing, we only caught ONE walleye, which was about a 17 incher. We nailed the bass on Shell Lake, but couldn't catch much else. Loon Lake produced a few 2 1/2 pound northerns, along with the biggest crappie of my life --14 1/2 inches! I would suggest only bringing leeches unless you have a quality crawler cooler, otherwise they'll get pretty ripe on you (ours did). I think the main problem with the walleye fishing, other than the heat, is the high water. Last Tuesday night, there was almost 5 inches of rain up there, which really affected the fishing. I hope I have been some help. Enjoy your trip, and report back with how you did.

There are two primary areas to locate walleyes this time of year on the East End of Basswood. First, look for deep water bottlenecks (i.e. between islands). The fish should be in about 20-30 feet of water. The second area to try is the deep weed edge. These fish will either be right on the edge or out from the weed bed. 10-15 ft is a typical depth this time of year.

In all my years on Basswood I found a jig and half a night crawler to work best (rig worm like a twister tail) this time of year. Use the smallest jig possible (I have used 1/8 oz. jigs in 30 ft of water when the wind would allow). Another presentation on a deep weed edge this time of year is using a #5 shad rap.

As for big pike, it is a very good time of year. Look on the deep weed edge in 10-12 ft of water. Medium to large crank baits and jerk baits are very good. Large suckers are also a good choice (use quick strike rigs to prevent the fish from swallowing).

Good luck fishing!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update -

We had our 3 year old daughter on the trip (refused to go to grandma's house) so fishing was not a real easy task. We did manage to catch a couple of walleyes despite the major cold front that came through a day before we went.

Thanks for the tips guys!!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
