I'll be out on and off all weekend. Since the river is so close, I generally make short but more frequent trips as weather conditions and time constraints dictate. Sorry, no radio in my boat yet, but it's a Smokercraft 175 Ultima. If you see me out there pull up and say hi.

Looks like I am taking some of our owners from Grand Superior Lodge out on Saturday (customer relations trip) and leaving Loonsfoot around 7:30-8:00am. Give me a shout and we can share our findings. South Shore or BUST!!!

I plan on fishing the big lake most of the weekend with the river, harbour being the back up if the wind kicks me off. Steve does midwest rods make trolling rods and rigger rods for the big lake? smile.gif

Looking at being out on the MN side of superior saturday morning also, with the harbor/lower river as a backup. Hope the winds are kind to do a little trolling on the pond.

Dont have the VHF installed yet, will be in a green lund/90 honda.

Strat, Loons foot is just off east 2nd street in Superior. If your heading out of town it's just before you cross the Namadji river. There is a spur station there also.

The launch is big enough to launch any size boat and it has spots for 4 boats to put in at a time. It could use more parking though. There are a lot of spots but a lot of people use it.

Bill and Al backed out for the weekend so Im sorry no rods to demo. Randy they make all sorts of rods. Just about anything you would ever need.

Loonsfoot is in Superior on Hwy 2 just before the Nemadji River. There is a ton of parking and the landing itself is as good as any around. You need to pay to launch or just get a seasons pass like I do. Saves ya a lot of money. You can get them at ICO on HWY 2 and I think other stations as well.

Northlander (or anyone), have you ever used the "Prop Shop" on hwy 53 right out of town? Are they any good, or is it best to spend the extra 20 bucks in shipping and have solderblooms do their magical work?

This is my first year on the river, and with 2 weeks fishing under my belt on it, only 1 prop is pretty darn good! Just got to keep my eye on the skeg!

I have had good luck in limited dealings with the prop shop. Got good advice from Eric and when a prop I bought just didn't work with my rig he promptly exchanged it for another no questions asked. I dropped off a crunched prop last Saturday and will pick it up soon. I trust them to do a good job but the proof will be when I put the repaired prop on and check out the performance.

It's not badly damaged, couple pieces taken out about the size of the half diameter of a pencil. Unfortunatly, it's enough to cause vibration, and i want to get 'er fixed before shaft gets bent.

unfortunately, i believe they charge the same amount if you have a slight ding, or if you are missing a whole blade.

Do you remember what you paid? It's a prop off a 50 horse merc...so not all that large.

Prop shop does good work but I prefer Jay Soderbloom. 1st because he is a sponsor of FM and second he has become a good friend. He does great work and stands behind his work 100%. You wont find a more stand up guy!

If you dont want to pay the shipping get the prop to me and Ill get it to Jay. Jay is a bit cheaper as well.

Woodie I may be able to have it done as I wait. If not it should only take a day or 2. He can also order you a prop at a great price. As you said you should always have 2. Let me know and I should see him this weekend.

Woodie:

The Prop Shop repair of my 115 Merc prop will cost me $55. Turn a round time less than a week. I have a spare prop, so it really isn't much of a issue for me, I just haven't been up to get my prop since it was promised to be ready yesterday.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
