Namaken Camping - June

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on bringing the wife and daughter into Namaken near the end of June for a few days of remote camping. We've been there in late September after school started, so we were able to find a choice spot fairly easily. Does anybody have a guess how easy/difficult it is to find good camping spots in late June? ... coming in on a Monday. Thanks in advance.

Thats a tough question to answer. My first thought is that most island campers will take off work on a Friday and camp for the weekend. If they break camp on Sunday afternoon it should leave plenty of choices by Monday. On the other hand school is out and more folks will be going on week long trips. Some school and church groups are also on canoeing trips. There are several great sites just as you get into Namaken from the Ash River and the Park launch near the Ash River. Get a site map as it will make your job finding a site easier if your first choice is taken. Have fun!

Monday in late June probably will not be too bad find "a" site...the problem will be in certain area's such as the Wolf Pack islands or Junction Bay will be slightly tougher to find a spot...

Try Johnson Bay, or there are several excellent campsites near Hoist Bay...if you're flexible the options of sites are out there. If you see anyone at the landing as your putting in, ask them if they were camping and "where" they were...most people are happy to help now that they've left the site.

Hope that helps...

There are many wonderful sites on Namakan and Sand Point. If you go into Grassy Bay on Sand Point on the north side of the bay there's a great site with a dock, leveled tent areas, and a beautiful point for campfires. But the best site of all is the bay on My Island in Namakan. The beach is the best for swimming that I've found. It's a popular site, but definitely try there first. The Walleye fishing in the channel on the south side of My Island can be pretty good, especially the eastern end.

Have fun!

Opener was decent on Saturday and absolutely on fire Sunday. 9 eyes, three over 25 in, one at 28.5. A bunch of largemouths, some crappie and perch and a TON of bullhead. One of those weekends where your hands start to hurt.

I'm quite happy since I'm going fishing with a pal for the first time in a long time. We plan to purchase some clothing for it, such as exclusive hoodies.

The majority of docks can't be put it. Water is over the top of pretty much every permanent dock.  Very few docks are in.

Crappies are all up shallow in the south metro. Caught this one shore fishing with a beetle spin from a more secluded lake without much access. All of the crappies were between 7-9 inches with this 11.5" being the exception

A co-worker reported they had some the best fishing ever on V last weekend.  Trolling 6-8 feet in the morning with HJ10’s.  Where the water temps were in the mid/low 50’s

Those campsites are right across the water from us. Seem pretty well protected and I haven't heard of challenging over there. Holiday weekends they fill up very fast

My son camped on Hinsdale with his aluminum runabout. Nice site but walking across the hull parked on uneven ground he separated a couple of the rivets.

Thanks "Skunked Again!" I searched old posts and it sounds like my fiberglass boat might not be the best rig for Hinsdale. Still, would appreciate more advice/input.

I don't know about either of them, but welcome to the forum.

I destroyed my main propeller saving a neighbors dock section from ramming my other neighbor's dock. Definitely watch out for each other out there.   Raven77 - on the plus side of the high water, the floating swim platform that you sold me the other year was able to just float off of the rocks that I had beached it on. No need to do any heavy lifting this season! I'm glad that I tied it to a tree as usual.
