Fishing From ELY---LAke One, etc

Our Boy Scout Troop is leaving from Lake one on a week Canoe and fishing Trip. Was hoping for information about what types of fish are best to fish for in the lakes. For Example, saw article for Walleye at Insula,. What about Lake 1, 2, Lake Insula, Alice Lake, Hatchet Lake, Ensign Lake... any help would be appreciated.

Was in Lakes 3 and 4 six different times. Caught a few northerns, one around 7 pounds. Always had enough walleyes for a meal, but had to work for them. I was last there about six years ago in about the second week of June. Most of the walleyes were caught off from our campsite in 6' to 8' of water between 7:00 pm to around midnight. It got too late to stay up any later. Bring a lantern.

Never fished Insula but it is supposed to be a good walleye lake. Try the "hole" in Hudson just before the 105 rd portage from Hudson to Insula. I've fished Alice and had very good luck. Been awhile now. Try the "finger" on the East? side. One finger goes to the Thomas Lake portage. Try the one going the other direction. Try the narrow points of the finger for walleye. Big northern i the finger also. There is a shallow spot more in the middle of Alice. I think some rocks are sticking up. Nice campsites, one great one on the finger and some nice ones, sandy, on the East? side of the big part of the lake. I may be going back there again next year. Please send a report. Have fun! Jim

Usually Lake One to Two doesn't produce very many fish. But 3 & 4 have walleye and northerns and other varieties. Try trolling for northerns while you paddle through. The south end of Lake Three has some nice walleye holes near the island campsites.

Alice has really nice walleyes, we get some of the biggest walleye recorded in the fishing contest from there.

Ensign is a prime spot for walleye and nice sized smallmouth but it can be a very heavily used lake.

If you want some up to date info, stop in our shop before you go out to Lake One and "talk fishing" to some of the guys in our bait/tackle shop.

If you don't have depth maps, we have those. However the new McKenzie and Fisher maps have a lot of lakes showing contours now, just not all. So that may be all you need.
