Friday Report

Well, I went out yesterday to both Erie and Hook. Let me say first that every weather station was wrong on their temps...again! grrr Was really looking forward to a gorgeous day on the water (temp wise) and it ended up being a bit chilly.

Anyhow, I got to Erie at about 7:00 a.m. Started fishing my old reliable location which is from the launch on to the west. One LM bass. Fished the point across from the island...nothing. Fished the points off the island...nothing. Fished the north shore...nothing. Dead sea! Tried minnows, crawlers and leaches and fished from 6' to 18' deep. Went into the shallows to see if the panfish are in yet, but they're not. Only saw a couple small LM bass.

Went to Hook at about 11:00a.m. Set up in the gap between the island and point north of it. Water is VERY merky on this lake right now. Clarity is about 12" at best. Used bright orange/chartruese fuzzy grub with minnow. Caught a 14" walleye (and kept), released a 10" walleye, released a 2lb LM bass, released a 20" northern and released a 26" northern. Saw one guy casting a stickbait and he caught a bass I think, a little to far away to tell. Tried the northwest corner and the point on the northeast side and didn't get a thing, though I missed one hit. Fished until 3:00 then had to get going to take my wife out for her b-day dinner and movie. One more thing...LOTS of carp at the outlet on the north side. Some BIG ones too. If any of you like to bow/arrow carp, that would be as good a place as any.

Water surface temp was around 56.5 to 57. About 5 degrees warmer than last weekend.

Erie has been one of my more favorite lakes in the past, but I think I'm going to cool my jets on this lake until we get a more significant warm-up. For whatever reason I just haven't been able to find the fish in this lake, and I've looked from 3' to the deep 30 and 35 foot holes. Didn't fish 35 foot deep, but didn't see anything either.

I think Hook would have produced a little more if it wasn't so murkey. The fish I caught came while anchored and pitching the jig. Really "jigged" the jig too to create as much movement and bottom bouncing noise as possible. Fish I caught actually were right up close to the boat where the jig was bouncing nearly vertical.

I think I'm going to try my luck at Belle, Collinwood, or perhaps even Howard. If Hook were to clear up, I'd be hitting that one harder, but with all the rain and the amount of runoff that runs into that lake, it may be a while before the clearity improves.

Just have to keep lake hopping I guess until we find the hot bite...of course, weather has quite a bit to do with that too.

Good luck and good fishin'!

Started out yesterday a.m. First disappointment was the rain. I would love to be a weather forecaster and be paid big bucks to screw up so bad!! Went to Big Swan. trolled and drifted with crawlers, leeches and minnows. 1 dog fish. Packed up and went to Jennie. Drove out onto the lake and was really disappointed to see the weeds. What a mess. Didn't feel like slip bobbering so put the boat back on the trailer and went to Belle. Fished this lake hard for about 2 hours or so. Fished all the main areas and did not boat a fish. I was shocked. It must be this horses**t weather we are having. It really needs to warm up a bit or at least give us a few days with steady temps. That's my post. Heading out today to see if I can do any better. confused.gif

Went out last night for a couple hours after dark and got one 21" walleye out on washington. Got him in about 7ft of water. I also missed two more that got off right after the hookset. One of them seemed like a very biggen. I could feel them shake their head a couple times and they threw my rappala. Wanted to get over to Jenny and give it a try but did not make it. I have heard they are getting a few their in front of the creeks. I may try the river today and possibly washington again Monday night. good luck. ff

Caught two on Friday, but it took all day to get them. Scattered. Nothing to produce a pattern. Still searching....

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
