Sorry to hear about that Backcast. I hope things are going okay for you.

The boat situation looks like this. Not sure about ReelTimes and Hammer 'em. Guys, you out there? Give a shout if your status has changed...

Boats + Riders

Lota Lota + 2 (+1 if space is limited)

OutdoorNut - boat filled up

ReelTimes + ?

Hammer 'em + 1

Riders - Some "maybes" so far.

Granny - maybe

Quickstrike - in

Xplorer - maybe

MrSenarighi - maybe

jj56342 - in (you have mail)

Surface Tension – It'd be great to have you along. If you need help getting the work on your place done maybe we could do an FM event and zip through the list...if you trust us gunkees being overhead with a hammer and nails. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Is most everybody planning on heading back on Sunday or will you be staying longer? I have the cabin through the 11th now but plans just changed and I don't think I'll need it past Sunday night. If anybody wants to keep the reservation past then post up quick or I'm going to cancel the extra days. OutdoorNut, if you are headed over Thursday AM you may need to get a different spot. You can call over there and ask if the cabin is available though. She has been very helpful with me in moving things around to accomadate the crew.

Lota,

Yeah I just noticed I was ahead of everyone else by one day. I'll have to call and see if we can get the cabin for Thursday night also. Or we'll crash somewhere near for the night. Everyone has vacation set so far, so we'll plan on being there and fishing by 5:00 a.m. Thursday. I'll give you a call tonight.

MrSenarighi,

Your not taking your boat?

Anyone one else want to head out with the Krinkle Wednesday night? S.T.??

Lota we may have to create a "FM Habitat for Deprived Fisherman" a network of labors to assure other FM guys get their "Honey Do" list done and granted permission to fish! ha ha

Lota,

Looks like there is a full crew in both boats. Probably just as well as it looks like i will have 2 large projects going at that time at the house and I should really be there to "supervise". Good luck to you guys and we'll expect a full report on the outing! Still hope i can salvage a few days on Superior in September.

Nate,

"Have you even got those new riggers wet yet??"

Nope frown.gif Just got the VHF installed a couple weeks ago before our trip up to Namakan. I'll be happy to get them on by Labor day and try to get in some late season use in Sept. I do get to spend another 5 days up on either Namakan or Rainy this weekend (wherever we can get an island campsite), the family trips have been the only thing that hasnt gotten cancelled this year.

You guys slay them kings at the Door, and maybe i can join you out by the Lester in Sept for a few runs at the fish.

I moved the cabin around so OutdoorNut's crew will have a roof on Thursday night. We'll have the cabin until Sunday morning.

Anybody else got a boat and an itch to poke some kings? We have a few riders that'd like to get in on the action.

Wow, only a week away already! I was just wondering what the final roll call was and if we needed a pre-outing get together (brewhouse maybe) to finalize things and make sure people are on the same page. Can't wait, thanks again to lota for getting this thing going and giving a few people this opportunitty that normally wouldn't be able to make such a trip.

I think a Brewhouse pre-planning conference would be warranted. Try for Monday or Tuesday of next week?

I am still waiting to hear back from jj56342 about what his plans look like. jj56342, if you are out there give a shout and let us know whats up. Aside from that, things are still on track to leave Thursday. Quick, I'll give you a buzz to talk logistics for the trip down.

All that is left is to put together a couple of leadcore rigs...

DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME! I WORKED ALL WEEKEND GETTING THE BOAT READY! I THINK WE'RE IN I HAVE 4 COMING IN MY BOAT AND I'LL BE A COUPLE DAYS BEHIND BUT SHOULD BE THERE SAT EARLY A.M. FOR THE BITE. I AM IN CONTACT WITH THE OUTDOOR NUT. THIS BOAT DOESN'T HAVE YOUR EVERYDAY GREAT LAKE KNOWLEDGE IN IT.....IT IS PRETTY CLOUDED UP WITH THE MILLE LACS MUD FLATS. SO ANY HELP FROM YOU GUYS OUT THERE WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED. I DON'T THINK KRINKLE WILL SEND ME OUT BLIND!! OH YA, WHATS A DOWN RIGGER?? wink.gif

Lota,

Just give me a call tonight when you are departing your house. I'll just meet you at the bottom of the hill and follow you over to Steve's.

Harpoon,

I just hope you can get that "Walleye Stink" out of that boat. These Trout and Salmon can smell you bottom bouncers a nautical mile away!

Should be a great trip, the boat is ready, the weather forcast looks great, now just get a couple coolers full of them Salmon and we are set!

10-4 OutdoorNut. Northlanders place it is. I'll give you a buzz tonight. You can connect with Harpoon???

Harpoon, Saturday sounds good. You just in for the weekend or will you be staying through Sunday night? We can probably get the cabin an extra night if you need it. We'll have three other guys looking for a place to crash on that Sunday night anyway. That boat sure is rigged purdy for deep water considering she's used to fishing Mille Lacs Mud Minnows... grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Lota,

That will work just fine. Harpoon and crew are planning on camping at the campground next to Journey's. They are just looking to "tag along" on the water. Harpoon won't be at the meeting tonight, for he is 3.5 hours SW of here. I hope he can keep up to the blistering speeds of the Krinkle (30 mph, downhill, with the wind at my back and empty) ha ha

They may be interested in taking the cabin after we are gone. I think they are staying out till Tuesday. I'll give him a call tonight after the meeting.

Harpoon,

Tell Waller his corn in the background of your picture is looking good!

Got back from Baileys Harbor on Friday and we really pounded em'. Didn't win the tourney out there but still had loads on fun! We mainly used j-plugs and green n gold spoons bought at Marine General on london road. One tip- hope you have a bigger boat than I did because we were blown off 3 days in a row.

The "One Eye" just got back and they said it slowed down with rough water & warmer temps, even the charters were only coming in with 15 fish for a full trip. He did see a 18# Brown at the cleaning station for what thats worth. You gentleman behave and don't do anything I wouldn't do!

Hey Lota,

We had talked about getting out again after the Coho Clean Up this spring. With summer slipping away and school around the corner for the kid's, I get alot of free time starting in Sept. If it's possbile, could I hook up with you in Sept. for a Lake Superior trip? During the week would work best for me and I thought you said you do get some time off during the week. Hopefully the lake will be a little calmer than what we had this spring? grin.gif

Good Luck on the trip guys. I'm looking forward to pics of those awesome kings!!!

Hey BMC, September is looking pretty good for now. Maybe a mid-week outing in the end of August too (kids welcome on board). I'll shoot you a note when we get back from DC and we can schedule.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
