FMers do the Door - Updates!!!

Recommended Posts

If this doesn't get you interested I don't think any words I type will!!!

SalmonGroup.jpg

But I'll try anyway...It is time to restart the planning for the "FMers do the Door" event. We have tentatively planned the trip for the first full weekend in August (5-7). I called the folks that have the cabin we will be staying to verify this and they just had a cancellation the week following what I have reserved ( www.journeysendmotel.com ). That brings me to this...what weekend can folks best make the trip? I currently have the cabin reserved for August 5th-7th. That'd be in Friday night and out Monday morning. She DOES have the cabin available all the way through the 13th. Does it work out better for guys to head over the following weekend? I know there are a couple of guys that can't make it the first weekend. How about the next? Also, the longer we rent the cabin the less it is per day. If guys are going to be coming and going at different times maybe we just get the cabin for the 10 day stint and figure out the cabin use on a day by day basis. The cabin reportedly sleeps 8 and they also have rooms in the motel if you'd rather do that.

So, who's in???

The boat situation so far looks like this. Let me know if your status has changed...

I am going the 2nd weekend in July, but would love to go again. Mrs. Senarighi is headed to New York as I type, so she should have no problem letting me go twice right? Count me in tenatively. And for anyone who has not been to Door County, make it a point to go and you will go back every year, it is awesome.(Unless you are from Alaska)

Looks like I'm a week off from you're schedule. I had to submit my vacation request in March, so I went and requested the time for the last weekend in July (28-31, expressly set aside for a Door trip.

Lota, great pix.

I'm in plus my riders. Being the first trip to Door for us we had plenty of willing riders. If anyone backs out from my group, I'll let you guys know asap!

I guess me and my group have the 5-7th off as of now.

I've got 4 riders planned, one is building his house this summer so it will a week or two prior b4 he'll know, and one guy will have to see is work schedule about a week prior. So there may be a chance of adding one or two riders, but the notice will be short! I'd like to say I could take one for sure, but will have to get the boys to give me a confirmation asap.

LotaLota,

I'm still tentativly in as a "rider". It will all depend on the "other-half's" on-call schedule. I will be able to give ya plenty of time in advance as i should know in June if this will work. Dang, those are some nice king's smile.gif

I can hear the drag screaming from here!!

Cheffrey:

Same pattern as last year - I'm heading out there the same day you're heading home. We're heading to B Harbor in the afternoon of 7/21.

Leave some fish for me please.

Awesome pic!

Was it AM or PM, and how do you expect me to get any serious work done now that you're sharing pics like that?

Nice Picture.

Ohh how I love those mornings out there! lines are set, hum of the wind through the cables, and already been out there for an hour and a half then WHAM! "FISH ON!" I have to drag myself out of my self induced coma laying in my bunk to net a fish. See you at the ball game!

Hour and a half??? If I don't have a fish in the boat within 15 minutes of 0400 I'm getting worried about things!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif Last Monday we got out amid the storms. I put down the starboard corner rigger, cranked the rod down, reached for the ball on the port rigger and watched the starboard rigger go...I see a new movie coming this summer - "Gone in 30 Seconds"!!!

A couple of guys have asked me about the Needlenose and Great Lakes Jewel spoons. They have been around a while but the glow paint is a new deal. You can get them at Marine General. They are not pictured on the website but if you call and ask for the ultimate glow Jewels and Needlenose they'll know what you are talking about. Better yet, stop in and drool on their spoon wall!

I just returned from Algoma Yesterday, fishing and weather was excellent. Most fish came on pearl coyote, with aqua fly 50 feet down. J-plugs were also hot, in black, purple, or black and purple. We left some fish for you Cheffrey.

So we are getting torturously close to the outing. Lets get a count of who’s in. I have the cabin at Journey’s End reserved from August 5th through the 7th and it is available through the 11th if we want it. It’ll apparently sleep 8 or so people. They do have other units available if we need more. I did a drive by of the place over the 4th and it will be a good place to gather. There are plenty of boat parking spaces. It is close to Bailey’s Harbor ramp, close enough to just leave rods in launchers and unload up there. It is maybe about 30 minutes from Gills Rock (the smallies may occupy us up there if the coolers are filled on the AM salmon runs).

I’ll be ready to roll on Thursday night. I’d plan to leave here in time to drive straight to Bailey’s for the AM run at 0400 (about 8pm etd). If guys in my crew can leave a little earlier that’s fine but we’d need to find somewhere to stay over there on Thursday night.

Lota,

I am still tentatively "in" on the run, do you have any room in your rig or are you full? I still gotta figure out daycare pickup on friday and this dang new house stuff is going painfully slow but hopefully a few major things will get tied up this next couple weeks. I NEED a weekend of screaming drags cool.gif

I'd be ready to roll after about 6pm on thursday.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
