For those of you who saw my desparation post on Friday afternoon on the main forum regarding my motor problems:

I ended up getting ahold of Duane's Outboard Repair up by Chalstrom's on Friday afternoon at around 3:30pm. These guys were GREAT!! Nobody else in the area were even willing to take the time to talk to me a little about my motor (I won't mention any names in particular). However, Duane's Outboard told me to come up right away, dropped what he was doing and fixed the problem in 10 minutes. I just wanted to give a quick plug for him on this website. Its the least I can do for what he did for me. If you're frustrated with the bigger outfits in this area, be sure to check him out, he's fair and treated me well...and my motor even better!

As far as fishing goes, spent Saturday through Monday on the river. Slower than past years, but still can't complain. Pout-slayer and I probably averaged about 25 fish a day, tops. Mostly in the 17 to 20 inch range...enough to keep us busy. Also, thanks to Northlander and BD110 for letting me hang out at the campsite. You may not hear it very often, but I am sure I speak for all of us when I say that we really appreciate the convenience of you being there every year. Steve, give me a hollar when you are breaking down. I'll be glad to help. Tom, how was Rice?? I'll see you guys out there on the river again soon. JH

Hey G&G,

As far as the campsite goes and all that it involves. We were living large that was for sure. Speeking for myself I would not do all the work that it takes to get things set up and kept running if I did not truly enjoy the time spent with good friends and being able to meet some new people. The river may have got the best of me but I sure had a great time. Thanks to whoever stopped by to say hi or fish. It made for a great time even if I did miss Sunday. I had to get off that river and on a lake to feel like it was opener. I went out with my brother and we had a good time with the Northerns. We could not get a Walleye to bite no matter what we did. The weather was not much better on Rice lake with a stiff wind and bitter cold temps but we made the best of it.

Northlander, pout-slayer, cheffrey and all it was great to hang out with you. Billy, Steve thanks for taking a kid fishing. I always look forward to wetting a line with the two of you.

Take care,

Tom (BD110)

Hey Green and Gold was that you jogging down water street the other day? I could have sworn I seen Poutslayer fishing out of the back of your boat at the slide! Looked like he was huffing gas or something cuzz he had the gas cap off your tank. What did the Poutman huff all the gas out of your tank? grin.gif

I was wondering what Pout was doing...every time I looked back there he was quickly shutting the gas tank hatch. I thought he was just keeping an eye on how much gas we had, APPARENTLY NOT!

BD-You're not the only on that has been frustrated by that river. I'm a novice myself...that's why I was lucky to have Billy in my boat. We'll have to get up to Rice some time and chase those northerns around. I have fished up there many times in the winter for pike and have pulled a couple big fish out of there, I mean 20 lbs plus! Never trolling though, always through the ice, or using big sucker minnows under bobbers.

Looks like I'll be out on the river this Saturday, and then again on Monday and Tuesday. I've got my grad party on Sunday, that, from what I hear, Northlander would rather fish than attend. Ouch that hurts. wink.gif Keep in touch, JH

Why it certainly is!!! It's on Sunday starting at 1pm. There's going to be lots of food on the grill (burgers, brats, chicken drummies), and many other dishes. Oh, and did I mention that my fellow graduate is planning to have a "barrel of fun." Its going to be in Lakeside. (Cheffrey, probably not too far from your neck of the woods.) FMers, email me if you are interested and want directions. I'm at hoyj @ co dot st-louis dot mn dot us. I would post the directions on here but it is not at my place and plus I would like to keep a count so we know how much food to bring.

Steve, I know you've got the contest this weekend. I was just giving you @#&%! tongue.gif I know you wouldn't pass up free food and beer unless you had a good excuse. I'm sure we will be there for awhile so you could always stop by after. Kettle Kid and Poutslayer, get your butts out there. Rob, you have no excuse, your Kelly's neighbor for heck's sake!!

Take care boys... JH

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
