Grand Rapids Winnie fishing report 5-16-05

Another opener came and went and another cold year. Wow was that rain and wind nasty this opener. The one good thing I have been hearing that the fish were cooperating fairly decent around the area. I was on Cass Lake and the water temp was 49 degrees about 5 degrees warmer than it has been the last few years. The fish were a bit deeper in the 15-16 ft range. We just kept working the West End (by Allen’s Bay) till we would find a school and they would bite pretty well. We were using 1/8-oz fireballs the firetiger and trolling slow or drifting. If you weren’t going slow you didn’t get fish.

I have heard that Winnie did well over the weekend with a lot of nice fish being brought in. Mostly I have heard the deeper water 12-14 ft on Winnie. The baitfish are piled on that drop and the fish seem to be smacking pretty well.

That is all the info I have. Get out there fishing and have a great day.

I have a buddy heading up to bowstring for a long weekend this weekend. Does anyone have any reports good or bad? I was on the st. louis river last weekend so I was looking for any info to help him out.

Bowstring seemed to do good when the wind was up. Most people seemed to be in 10-15 fow. Most were casting jigs, some guys did good, and others like me couldn't keep the hammerhandles off the line. That's about all I can offer. I didn't catch a single eye, I did have a couple walleye bites while live bait rigging but I don't think I fed them enough line. I used a long leader and that seemed to work better than a lindy rig but this is coming from someone who didn't catch a single eye. Oh well. There's alot of summer to fish. If your buddy does well let us know.

I have questions about the following hypothetical. Buy used boat and trailer from Iowa Resident. Would need to transfer, and I have not done before. Duck boat, may occasionally fish out of it. Technically 15'11 1/2" long. Will have motor. Do I need a title? Does it need registration?   Same for trailer. Need a title? Need Registration? License Plate?   Thank you for any help.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?

Sight fished this one, also got a 19" off a bed with a senko but didn't get a picture because my phone died. Length was 14" for the one in the photo. Haven't been able to get out much recently, but I should be able to go Saturday.

Sizes caught matched most recent survey very closely - a lot of 12-14" fish with a few 15". Three to six feet of water against rocky shoreline at dusk was very productive. Fish still discharging milt. Should continue to be great fishing for next couple weeks along shoreline.

Our group of 6 guys did pretty good. From Thursday evening to Sunday caught a bunch of crappies, 4 walleyes that were to big, a handful of pike and sunfish. One sunfish was 11". All on the west end.

You did a lot better than us...  Did you mostly catch them in mornings and evenings or were you able to catch them mid-day also?

We were up this past weekend.  We got cold but did ok.  We caught around 40 walleye.  Most were 12-14" a handful of 14-16".  Good activity and a full fry pan, but no bigger fish.  Frazer and Smarts bays.  All Jig and minnow.  Mornings we found them at 24-26 FOW.  Evenings in 7-10 FOW.  Water temp was 50-52.

Was out the last 2 days. Saw some Crappies caught in warmer bays. Not much action outside the mouths of bays today. Hoping it picks up this week. Trying to learn this lake over the summer.
