Well I had these two gobblers pinned down and gobbling their heads off waiting to hear them fly up. It was pretty dark but I hadn't heard those wing beats yet. Then I heard another hunter owl hoot. I knew I'm the only one able to hunt this land this week. So I hoot back to let him know I'm there and on these birds. Then he walks right past them towards me and hollers, Hey how you doing?" I get him to quiet down and then hear the wing beats. I'm hoping they were just flying up but they never gobbled again. I'm guessing he busted them. My luck. The guys hunts the season after me next week.

Oh well. It was pretty dark so they probably didn't go too far. I'll just have to find them again in the morning.

I know the feeling, we were in SD last week, saw & heard a bunch of birds on Friday mid morning when we arrive. Head back there Friday evening to check on the roosting and there are a bunch of kids partying in a closed area. Needless to say the next morning we didn't see or hear a thing in that area....

They didn't go far. Gobbled quite a bit on the limb. But turkey calls of any type made them go silent. They would gobble occasionally to a crow call. They didn't appear to have hens as I only hearde two birds fly down and was close enough to see on of them leave the limb. But they just weren't interested.

We did have one come in silent that caught my son offguard. Ended up busting him. Lesson learned for him. They don't always gobble when they are coming in.

The saga continues Thursday morning. laugh.gif

Best of Luck to you and yours, Borch. You don't happen to have relatives south of Belle Plaine, do you? Just curious, we are hunting down there and I was looking at Plat books to find land owners (we are hunting on Public) and saw some familiar names.

My wife and I are starting Sunday, looks like in the rain!

Best of Luck to all how will be going and congrats to those who bagged birds. Turkey hunting is AWESOME!

Borch:

Nothing worse than that feeling. You simply know you have it to yourself.....and then you don't. Grrrrrr. But it sounds like it didn't ruin your hunt.

Tough morning.....cold. I called/videotaped for a buddy this morning, and we didn't hear a gobble until it got warmer out. In the deep valley we were hunting, it was 21 degrees before sunrise.

We finally got on a hot pair of birds......see stories from the hunt.
