No crappies on that outing. I talked to a guy at the landing when I was pulling my boat out. He had a lot of experience on the lake and said he was waiting for it to turn over. He said he had been out there the Satruday before and hit 14 of his crappie holes and didn't catch a thing.

Thanks Casey ~

I just might try it this weekend.

P.S. Do you know any of the Eddie's that live in Babbitt. They're my relatives.

Went out on Birch Thursday, water temp was 50. Caught a 17" smallie and a rock bass.

Talked to a guy at the landing, no walleyes for him either. He said he caught a 9lb'er the day before.

I have only been in Babbitt for about a year. I haven't met the Eddies yet.

Do any FM'ers fish Birch in the winter? Do you go for Walleyes? Crappies? Base on my open water experience with the lake I am sure the rock bass are ferocious durring the winter.

Has anybody been out on Birch Lake lately? Are the fish biting? How is the ice? I have not fished the lake in the winter at all. Does the ice get thick enough to drive on?

Any info greatly appreciated. Last post I saw was from STFCatfish and he was icefishing with 1/2" of water on the ice with the lovely weather we had earlier this winter.

I haven't been out there yet this winter. I had a house out from Mattila's Resort last winter and it was slow then. I was thinking about making a trip down there possibly next week.

Take Care, Justin

Any recent crappie reports from Birch?

I am thinking of heading out there Friday to try to find a few slabs. I was planning on trying bays and aiming for 6 to 8 ft deep.

One smallie that went about 2lbs. 12 walleyes. Most were 13.5" to 14". My dad caught one that was about `19". Most fish came at 8' - 10' deep. One in about 17'. Fish bit on minnows and leeches.

I've been up on Birch for the last four Memorial Day weekends. Fishing has typically been pretty decent - although the patterns I have found are a bit unusual.

I was really suprised with the water temps this weekend. Much, much warmer than I am used to. On Friday afternoon surface temps were in the mid-70's, no joke. I thought my temp sensor was broke. It was hot all weekend, although there was lots of wind Saturday through Monday. I think the fish are full-blown in their summer patterns. This thread has been a good one. Wanted to keep it alive.

I was up Thursday night through Monday with the family as well. Fishing was only fair for us. We ended up keeping 10 Walleyes and one pike under the slot. Six Walleyes under 14 returned with the biggest only 16 inches and two pike over 24. Fish were caught from 7 feet down to 21 feet. Really couldn't establish a constant pattern. Spent most of the time on the North wind swept shore. Most were taken on a Lindy, some on a jig. No discernable difference between leeches, rainbows or fat heads. Blombergs had no rainbows for the weekend. mad.gif What's up with that? confused.gif

On the plus side the 57 inch drift sock from Cabela's is a winner smile.gif. Will be up again the 8th-11th. Will post a report again upon return. Casey, have you been out on Birch? Good Luck everyone.

I was up with two buddies the 8th - 11th. Can you say Mayfly. shocked.gif Surface water temps 66-70. Fishing was better than two weeks previous though. We boated 57 Walleye's biggest 19, 5 Pike biggest 28, 2 Smallies biggest 17, 2 Suckers, 1 Rocky, 1 Perch. We kept 22 Walleye's. Fish were caught on leeches and rainbows with Lindy's, jigs and slip Bobbers. Best times dawn and dusk near bottom in 10-16 feet. We also caught them by removing all but a small split shot and moving faster. This targeted the fish that were surface feeding on Mayflies during the day. 9 days camping on Birch since Opener without a drop of rain smirk.gif And you gotta love the sunsets.

I was out on the 11th. No where near the luck you had, Tom. I missed a few fish and caught one little smallie. I noticed a large cloud hanging out between 9 and 8 feet on a fairly sharp break with a few decent arcs behind it in about 10 feet. No takers on the bait I was presenting. confused.gif

Good to hear you had success on your outing.

I haven't been out lately but there have been a few fish caught. It sounded like the mayfly hatch may have slowed it down a little bit.

Has anybody been out on Birch lately? The last time I was out it looked like there had recently been a massive mayfly hatch and the fish were reluctant to bite.

I was there 2 weekends in a row--(the weekend of June 16th and also the weekend of the 23rd)

Both week-ends were slow for walleyes. A few were caught but nothing worth mentioning. Mayflies being the main source of food for them. I tried all kinds os methods and depths.

I'll be heading up again the weekend of July 14th. Hopefully things will have picked up by then. smirk.gif

Heading up there tommorrow for a week on a Kinsey houseboat. My local bud said the walleye are starting to hit again. Guess I'll find out when we get there tommorrow. Can't believe a week of fishing is finnally here! There are 10 of us going so should be fun no matter what. grin.gif

Heading to Birch at the end of August for a houseboat trip with brothers, nephew, and dad. Anyone been out there lately? We're looking at going for some walleyes and northerns but will go after panfish if the frying pan is empty. If I have fishing fever bad now (11pm and way too wired to sleep) the next five weeks are going to be pretty rough. I would also accept any tips for fishing this lake at that time of year. Thank you.

Has anybody been going for smallies lately?

A buddy and I got into a school last fall. It seemed like they were getting consecutively bigger as we were catching them. There are definatly some hawgs in there.

I read that the lake has Rusty Crawfish too.

Rusties = Lots O' smallie food!

Joe

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
