Congrats Cliff. I am sure you will put them on fish. That goes for all. And for everyone else. Remember there will be lots of media coverage up there for the opener. Lets give a possitive image for them to capture. Less ammo for the people who do not like fishing. I also regret to say that I will not be up this year for opener frown.gif. I am getting married on 4/30 and will be gone on honeymoon from 5/2-5/9 and I am not going to be able to work for 3 days then take off for 5 more. Just not going to work. So everyone have fun.

Congrats, Cliff! I'm sure the LT. Gov. will have a great time with you. grin.gif

So does this mean that Doug will be taking the Gov. to the West End and you'll be on the East?

Or have they laid out some sort of plan for you all to follow so the media gets the footage that they want?

Good luck to everyone, see you on the second weekend... between the extra folks who'll be fishing and work, I'll be coming up on weekend 2 this year... cool.gif

I don't know where Doug will be, but I suspect he will be fishing the West end.

Where are the Governor and his crew staying? I would think that would have something to do with where they fish.

The Governor will be staying at Fortune Bay but I doubt Doug will fish the east end, the people at the resort asscociation would have a major fit if all the fish came from the east end. grin.gif

I don't think anyone is suprised that they picked

Doug to take the Gov fishing. I'll be out fishing with the former state director of tourism. smile.gif

Good luck guys, see you at the casino.grin.gif

Do you know if they are still looking for volunteer host guides?

Have been on the road a lot, havn't had a lot of time to view the post.

Just for info, Southern WI lakes all open, killing the carrpies, steelhead running too.

Might be another season of fish going deep again after spwan due to no food up shallow eh?

smile.gif

No dock bite but fun in the holes.

Have to do our shore lunch thing next day instead of 2 AM and the Walleye dance fer sure.

Crunch time is ever so near, but yet so far away.

Way cool guys.

Doug has been guiding on Vermilion since about the mid 70's. His father in law is Gene Jenkins who has several decades of guiding on Vermilion under his belt. Doug and I grew up fishing together so I know he is good as I taught him well. LOL grin.gif

I'm sure Doug will put the Gov on some fish and I wouldn't bet that he is going to fish only the West end if at all.

Cliff - If you havn't talked with Doug yet you will soon as you guys will have to have some sort of game plan worked out.

Go ice Go!!!!!

John,

Go to the mndnr.org site and you should be able to get all of the info. that we have been given.

As I stated earlier, I am not generally in favor of slots!

But the data collected by the DNR on Lake Vermilion has convinced me that something has to be done before it is too late!

My advice to you on your lake would be to listen to the local DNR's advice. Not to any knee-jerk ideas that local clubs or outsiders think you should be doing!

Hope to see you at The Opener! smile.gif

cliff thank you very much. I to have been against slots and limits but when you see the taking and puting of walleye due to many reasons, i have also relented. do you beleive the small mouth population explosion on our lake has had an effect? they have pushed the walleye off their normal haunts for sure, and almost depleted the forage. they have been protected for 8years no harvest john

John,

I am not familiar with your lake, but an over abundance of any species of fish will have a negative effect on other species.

I too noticed an effect on Vermilion's walleyes when the smallmouth bass here first really took off. mad.gif

There appears to be a better balance now, after many years of some people keeping and eating them. smile.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
