STONEHOUSE ON MILLE LACS

Does anyone know anything about the marina next to the Stonehouse on the west side of Mille Lacs, I think it's called Port Mille Lacs? This marina is just north of Wigwam Bay. Who owns it? Any future plans? My parents used to dock their boat there when they had lakeshore right down the street-when it was only woods-very few cabins compared to today. The marina used to be real well kept but now it looks pretty run down. Just taking a walk down memory lane, seeing if anyone knows what Im talking about.

Oh yes, I am very familiar with that location. In the late 80's we used that access many times. The campground where I own property had some sort of relationship with the marina and we were able to put our boat in/out there. Many a trips out to three mile and garrison reef from that very spot.

I belive it is a private marina now. I have visted the area for kicks and it is all fenced up. Thanks for reminding me of my youth..

Vikes40for60,

Do you have any interesting details about the stonehouse there? What purpose did this house serve? Was it just a cabin or did it serve some special purpose? Who built it and around what period? Also, I used to catch plenty o' 'eyes off my parent's dock early in the season. Any reports of the bite here in recent years. The area that I speak of would be about 200 yds south of the stonehouse.?

I have a cabin in Wig-Wam just down the road from that marina, we still get eyes early in the season off our dock. The Marina is now Private and fenced off, I still fish it for crappies once in awhile but I never get any. I think the stone house your talking about was owned by Earl Brown but its now for sale I think. It was his cabin.

i can remember back when i was just maybe 6 y/o,coming down to mille lacs on the west side somewhere... i dont know exactly where. maybe in or around garrison, maybe down where the casino is now.... maybe back up by the motel just north of twin piness, and i remember it was just like carnival time, or like the crowds that used to gather for smelting in duluth. it seemed like such a special thing, that sooo many people would gather for it. im pretty sure we night fished and im pretty sure we did it from shore. i remember climbing on big rocks... i think we just tossed out as far as we could and let it sit.

The rock house was sold last year at an auction, so was alot of other personal belongings of the people that lived there. The whole place had been refinished. I think the guy that owned it bought it either from Port Mille Lacs or on forcloser from the bank or county,( if you really want to know i can ask him ). anyway he owned 3 or 4 lots and the house. Everything there now is private. I didn't know it was up for sale again. When Port Mille Lacs was operating the house was used as a lodge and the buildig next to it was the game room.

Thanks for the input guys.
Donotto, thanks, but you don't need to dig any deeper than you already have. I am curious though, WHAT is Port Mille Lacs? Is it a community or is it a township or what exactly is it?

Port Mille Lacs was an association who built roads and sold lots on what we knew as Browns Point. The place 'went under', with the remaing lots being sold either as tax forfeited or by the holding co..

I came up when it was hot (mid 80's) and unfortunately it has stayed that way the whole trip.  I knew I was doomed when Pike Bay was over 82 degrees, and Big Bay was well in the mid 70's.  Skies have been blue, and with little wind to break up the water.  I got up around 5 am, and stayed on the lake until 10 or so.  I didn't want to get sick, this is supposed to be fun afterall, and I came back on after 4 pm.  I trolled trying to find them.  I was successful, but only got enough to get some fish fry's for the family.  The bigger ones came from lead core, with an occasional one coming in from trolling shallow.  DNR stopped by while on the lake, and he said the mayfly hatch might be starting.  Good luck everybody!

Question for this knowledgeable group   I've noticed over the past two weeks at the lake that in certain areas there seems to be a ton of black "duck-like" floaters that seem to congregate by tons and stir up the water and then move to another area close by, stir up the water again and move again. I've seen them recently in Greenwood Bay and around Fectos.   Are these cormorants? Are they stirring up the water by fishing?   Thanks

Followed the advice I posted, slip bobbers w rainbows and crawlers in big bay on a dozen humps topping out at 6 to 12'. Caught a few smalles and a couple 12" walleyes. So not very successful but maybe didn't hit the right humps or lake was too calm or wrong time of day - 7:30 11 am. That's why they call it fishin'

I may have to take you up on that. I've been moving for a month and don't even have my boat in the lake yet!

Walleye Report:  Just spent a week on the lake (East end).  The fishing was as hot as the weather with many, many 14-25" walleyes.   Surface Temps: Consistently 70-72 with the recent hot weather.  Swimming was comfortable the past three days.  Depths:  All caught in less than 10 FOW Techniques: Lures - Plastics and jerkbaits.  We bought two dozen leeches but never opened them.  I do regret not watching a bobber dip below the surface.   Tactics: Cast and retrieve lures in sandy bays, over main lake/secondary rocky points, across rocky flats, between sandy flats, and throughout silt/mud bays with shallow weeds.  A little wind and clouds helped but was not always necessary.  And we had lots of random fish.    Advice:  Get out there and fish.  These patterns should hold for the next week-two.  The fish are aggressively feeding in the shallows where they are finding crawfish, shiners, etc.  A fast moving bait is getting hammered.  I literally can't tell you how many times I saw fish INHALE our presentations at the boat.   The population is healthy.  Catch and keep a few and let a bunch of them go.     Good luck.

Lol, if they had enough enforcement in the first place. They may catch them the rest of the season without the tag!
