Weekend Report

Scott Steil

Recommended Posts

Adam and I spent Saturday trying to get to our "A" spots. For the most part we found good ice. However, there are still lots of spots of open water. We ended up getting 19 walleye on the day with 6 fish going over 6 lbs, including five 26-27 inchers and one 28 incher. It was a great day even though Adam caught most of the big fish frown.gif

Besides all the big fish we did get 7 fish that we could have kept and one really nice pike. Hopefully this bite is a sign of what is to come for the year.

Scott or Adam, share with us if you will best place to access with a atv. and depth you caught your fish. I heard the east side is real ruff from the wind? I was going to head to LOw and then I changed my mind to Mille Lacs, Now it looks like Minnetonka, Did you fish West Or east side. Just need to wet a line. Thanks

We fished the NW & SW sides of the lake. The ice on the West side is pretty much in good shape for accessing the lake. The area in front of Rocky Reef has old snow piled up and then the waves froze it solid. It can be a little challege crossing but after you get out it is smooth sailing out there.

We targeted 12-15ft for the big fish and 19-24 for the eater size fish. There are lots of little perch out there this winter so action is not a problem.

Thanks Scott, I have that on my rod to! Now if I can only catch a fish. Do you guys guide in the winter to?

Yes, that is our main business. We rent out a few sleepers but our main business is guiding on the ice. We provide all the equipment, including electronics. It can be a lot of fun this time of year.

We are using tomorrow to put out some sleepers and then the guide trips start. As of this AM we still had openings for the weekend.

I went out Sunday afternoon out of Lybacks. 8" of ice. Caught 10 nice perch in about 8' of water. It was kinda neat, I was able to sight fish. The water was nice and clean.

Scott & Adam;

Way to go! Great fish and excellent reporting. Thank you for all the updates and tips.

Just wondering, when you leave in the morning, do you guys actually tell your significant others that you are "going to work now"? ( grin.gif)

Thanks again,

Gadget

Rick, you are not supposed to zoom in so close on the secret lure.LOL

Sorry, we don't have any sleepers that can accomidate 6 people. I have heard that McQoids does though. Our sleeper houses are booking up fast. I think we have 2 weekends open in January yet, and one in December open. As for during the week, well, we still have plenty of openings.

We generally tell our wives that we have to do A LOT of prefishing to stay on the fish (which is true). It is not to often we get to go on these "scouting missions" like we did Saturday. Generally one of us has a guide trip so the other is off looking for spots.

You can email me, [email protected] if you have are looking for a specific weekend.

Wow, that's a life size photo. smile.gif No I'm not a criminal, that's just the way most of my pictures turn out. Scott covered the depths and Rick gave away our lure selection, but I'd like to add that we got fish to react to whole minnows on the spoons as well as just the heads. Most could be enticed by the action you gave the spoon, or lack of action. A couple of the fish were caught on a deadstick after the Glow Devil lured them in.

I use 4lb vanish. On the rods I give clients I have 6lb vanish....less broken lines that way.

TRZ, Nice pike. I bet that got the blood flowing.

Scotty18, did you see any walleyes roaming where you were sight fishing? The walleyes are up there too, but with the clear ice or lack of snow to cut down on the noise you make on the ice they can be spooked easily.

Fishnutbob, like Scott said, the ice is good for atv travel in many areas, but there were a lot of spots that broke open on Wed in the wind and now sport 3-4" of ice. There was even open water in spots on Saturday. Although we saw 8" in many places we went, caution is still needed.

Good luck

Scott & Adam --

I suppose you caught all those nice fish around that area Stan and I usually fish. grin.gif We decided to try something different and headed to another lake last weekend. It's nice to be fishing again! Maybe we'll see you on the lake.

OH, I forgot to mention those pictures are
really big, but that's OK - like you mentioned now we know your secret lure.

I'd like to say yes Vickie, but we couldn't get there because of a pressure ridge and open water. I'm going to hopefully get out to that spot tomorrow depending on what the weather brings tonight. E-mail me at [email protected]. There were some nasty areas of open water out there on Wed because of the wind.

Those are true hogs! I have two quick Q's, what kind of line and pound test are you using to pull up those beasts?

Thanks

Was out all day saturday in the isle area, we got 20 perch over 10 inches. my partner also caught a 40 inch pike with a 22 inch girth, one of the biggest i have ever seen. it was about a 15 min. fight, what a bueaty. all fish caught in the weeds. we did hit a large area that only had 2 inches of ice so be careful!

Vickie - Just thought I'd check and see if this is the correct Vickie. Is this Mr. Matthews' fishing partner? If not please disregard this post. If so, this is Ryan (Jorge's son). I'll check back to see if this is you.

Well small world huh? I actually have been hunting with Stan for years, and Vickie too a few years back. My dad grew up with Stan and are good friends. I saw Vickie's post and then it said Stan, and then I thought it had to be her. So Scott, do you know those two very well? Both of them know their stuff very well and I wish I could spend more time on the ice around them. Maybe a little of their skills/luck could rub off on me a bit?? Well if you talk to either Stan or Vickie, tell them Ryan says hi and wants some Mille Lacs hot spots!!!!

Hi Ryan -- You were right! Did you get that deer this year?? We fished the Big lake up by the trailer last weekend and will be heading there this weekend, too. Stan's fishhouse is up there and mine is still in my driveway -- for trolling. We're hoping to get to Mille Lacs a few times this year. Give Stan a call he'll give you a few places to find those fish. wink.gif

Say hi to your dad.

Vickie - Well good to hear from you on here! Yeah I got a doe on the Monday morning after we came over to the trailer on that Sunday. We didn't get any big bucks in our group, like you had, but we did manage to bring home 5 deer out of 6 tags. So how's the bite been on the big lake up there? I've gotten out a few times around the cities getting a few here and there. Haven't been able to put too much time on the ice yet, but that'll soon change. I'll say hi to my Dad for you too. Dad, Butts, and I are actually going up to Lake of the Woods the Friday after X-Mas for a long weekend. I have to get them into some real walleye fishing. Hopefully they'll be hooked and then want to make it a regular trip every year. I know I am after last year. I'll be up there a couple more time this winter too with some friends. Anyways, good luck this weekend up there!

Ryan

I was the world’s biggest skeptic. I just couldn’t face another divorce, and I wanted to try harder to make our relationship work, but my husband didn’t seem to care. and he broke up with me again . I was confused and did not know what to do again, rather they got in contact with HAKEEM AHMED. He did a love spell that made my husband come back to me. We are now very much happy with ourselves. HAKEEM AHMED makes him realize how much we love and need each other .This man is for REAL and for good . He can also help you to fix your broken relationship. I had my husband back! Heading up early Saturday morning. Going to be a short, discombobulated trip this year. Starting with 4 of us but one has to leave to watch his son play in state (WI) baseball tournament on Tuesday. Rest of us are only there until Wednesday. Kind of disappointing but I'm thinking we'll have to make a trip in September as well.    Forecast calls for wind!

Those are cormorants and they are aggressive fish eaters.  I saw more last weekend than typical on vermilion.  Pretty common  on the east end but I don’t usually see much of any on the west which is where we were.  They eat a lot of fish and surprisingly large fish for their size so they aren’t great for the fish populations.     I can’t believe how fast the water warmed up.  We were seeing up to the high 70’s last weekend.  Typically mid June is mid to upper 60’s.  The Muskies didn’t seem to be too fired up with the quick warm up.  The ones we moved were lazy and would not go in to the turn.  Hopefully some more normal temps this week help.
