Trophy night

Mr. Pike1

Recommended Posts

I was out on the big pond on Saturday night with Mykal from the site. The quantity of fish caught was much below both of our expectations however we could not argue with the quality. The fishing Gods were shining on Mykal this fine evening and I quickly took ownership of net duties. Mykal posted the following gems:

Smallmouth- 20"- 5lbs
Walleye- 27.5"- 8lb plus
Musky- 46" and thick- I would be curious as to a guesstimate on weight.

My walleye was a 27.5" football. The way it fought we thought it might have been a musky. Bob you did a awesome job of putting us on some quality fish!

Also put a 25.5 eye on board. Not much doing for numbers where we were, but what a great night it was for trolling. I was very pleased with the quality of fish. Pike, your turn is coming. The best fishing is still to come. Must have been the new trolling rod I picked up!

WALLEYE_GFA Just Curious...what kind of boat are you fishing in? Is it solid dark green? What speed have you been having success with?

Mykal, it appears Bigeyes has been at the right spot at the right time. We have found eyes but definatly not a slaughter by any means. Oh well to quote Al Linder...The fish are always biting somewhere.

So you were th person I was talking to at the lake??? Thats cool !!!!!

The bite was from 7:45 till 9:45 almost like clockwork... FYI I was using smaller walleye lures (rogues) catching the muskies... pure luck since I was after walleyes, was shocked to catch the skis...

Wally

What part of town you in ??? Tonka here...

Did we talk at the ramp? Sounds like we should have stuck around longer. However, we did stick a "pig" but that was about 4:30.

Those skies must be fun on walleye tackle???

Was someone in your boat wearing a Packer hat?

I was wearing a Packer hat on Saturday night. We launched from the public launch just to the north of Indian point. Am I the guy you saw? We did ok on sat with nine walleyes with the largest being about 24", a 19" smallmouth, 32" northern and a 42" musky. We're calling it the grand salami for the four species caught. Are you guys having luck without the moon?

It was actually Friday we were up. I've got an Alumacraft trophy 170. We actually launched at around 5:00, I think.

Thanks esoxman. Hopefully we still have a good 4 weeks of fishing left to get into some decent fish. All depends on Mother Nature. Pike, I will be heading up this weekend and fishing with Bigeyes and Alphid. You able to come up?

Mykal, Mr. Pike will not be able to go up this weekend. My Back is out and I will need to give it some rest and medication over the weekend. Give me the report on how Alphid, Bigeyes, and yourself do. I hope one of you get that 30 incher you are chasing.

This is a late report, but last Sat we fished big pond from 8am until 10pm. We started fishing for smallies--zilch..we noticed perch tugging on the bass jigs so we scaled down and caught a bunch of nice jumbos to take home. Believe it or not we caught some really nice bluegills--that's right, bluegills. We trolled HJs from dark until 10pm and caught 3 eyes--24" 25" and 29". Also, during the day had lazy follow from about 52-55" FAT musky.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
