Wednesday Walleye

Recommended Posts

i was out last nite doing the same thing i do all the time, got the radio on, cleanin up the house, put a little wood in the stove and all of a sudden a hear the brake on my pole start to squeal. thank goodness i didn't have it set to tight, so i dash over to my pole and set the hook! game on! after this fish swam around the other line in my house and about 4-5mins later with my knees startin to shake, the hook straightened out! don't know what i had but it was big and all it did is take take take line.

know that i've redone my lines i start to fish again, and again i get another bite, 16" wally, another bite, 16" wally, looked like brothers. another bite, 14" wally, looked like little sister, another bite, 16" wally and it went that way all nite until it stopped snowin. one fish about every 10-15mins. even had a half dozen perch in the mix.

kornfish we need to hook up so i can help you out with your problem! (no eyes) and metrojoe let me know when you can get another day pass! later DOGG

Way to go Dogg, Sounds like you had a little action. Perfect size for a walleye sandwich.

House still at the same spot?.

Let me know when you’ll be out there. I’m booked Saturday but either Sunday or Monday is a possibility. Probably should get out there when the bite is hot. Drop me a mail or post here what your plans are. Hopefully this cold snap doesn't shut them down.

hey Korn and Metro i'm thinkin the next nite for a good walleye bite well be... you can meet me at my shack and yes it's still in the same spot Joe. i'm free by two most afternoons and to the shack 2:40ish. the bite has been good from 3:30 to about 5:30 then it shuts down. let me know if you can make it that day monday and i'll give ya a call or email with directions.

if you don't know what you're doing but somehow are in the right place at the right time you can still go without catchin any fish, just ask the guy in the house next to me! lol later DOGG

Perfect timing. Hungry fish. And, of course, nothing beats practice. Just ask a doctor, they're always practicing.

i was wishin for a little more action tonite but the wind was a bit strong, the next two or three nites should be some good fishin with this warmer weather. good luck to all the readers out there, later DOGG

Thanks for having me out there DOGG.

even though I had to suffer and watch you catch the eyes, it was sure nice seeing someone was getting them. I'll be trying your tricks this weekend for sure.

I didn't do too well last night for the crappies after I left your shack. One crappie and bunch of gills. Changed the set up over for eyes with the rattle reels around 9. had a nice eye on right after midnight. Then the fat lady sang and I lost it trying to turn it up the hole. frown.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
