Trying to find a place to stay on Mille Lacs

Hello~I am hoping somebody could help recommend a place to stay on Mille Lacs Lake. I have searched the internet and I am overwhelmed at where to start. Our days are very flexible when we want to visit but I am looking for a place for my husband and myself along with 2 little children. Our idea place would be on Mille Lacs Lake, with a place to swim, a nicer cabin (that is my request) kind of private. But still close enough to launch a boat. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! THANKS!!

Vicki, I would suggest Hunters Point resort. they have cabins on the water and a great launch area. They also have some of the best food on the lake.

Hi Vicky, I am not an epert on the lake yet, but had a similar problem earlier this year.My lady friend and I wanted to find the same type of resort so my daughter could swim and have a little more activity while I was out pulling lures around.
We normaly stay at Agate Bay resort on the East side, they have real nive motel type cabins there. But they lack any real recreational areas for kids.It seems most of the resorts on the lake are geared toward fishing and not familly recreation.
However I did find a few, Fishers have a play station and I think they have a swimming area per say but not an acual beach.

Castaways had a swim area but not a regular beach, but I didn't see any play areas.

There are a couple on the Norht west side that cater more toward the family but you have to cross HWY 169 to get to the lake.

We didn't have time to search the South side much and the North side looked like mainly mom and pop type resorts that only cater to fishing.

I used the resort locator link on this site to check out a lot of them before acualy driving around up there. Most were acurate in there discriptions on their web sites.

Good luck and hope I have given you some usefull info.
Benny

Thank You both very much for your suggestions. I have spent hours on the computer trying to decide which place to stay at. Now thanks to you both I can go to bed. I just needed a little direction *smiles*

I have stayed at birchwood resort in garrison before and its a nice place. Playground for the kids, close to garison creek marina and pikes point public launch. You have to cross the highway to get to the lake but its all real nice sand beach across the road. Cabins are a little plain but I used to enjoy staying there.

I would take a look at the Red Door Inn also. I like the location this time of year too. Close to the Flats and those North End Muskies can be fun too. I know they have good water for swinmming up there too. Sand and its shallow.

I recommend Hunters Point also. New cabins with great food and bar. Nice sandy shore line with a nice boat launch area. Can't go wrong in my opinion.

I second Mayfly. The red door has always given us excellent service and the location is great during these times.

I stoped at the Red Door inn , they didn't have much at all for the kids.Just a few games in the office and a small play station. No beach that I saw, but may beable to swim there as the North end is all sand for the most part.

Hunters didn't seem to have much either and was very crowded(sp?).The fish houses seemed like they were packed right on top of the cabins and there were people every where, wheelers running around all over the place.
I am not saying any thing bad about Hunters or the Red Door, just stating my observations when I was there looking for a family orentated resort.

I didn't look at Mac's or their other resort as they tend to be pricey. Also didn't go to Johnsons as I was told they were just a fishing resort and nothing for the kids to do.

Pikes point was the one I looked at on the North West end that had lots of stuff for the kids, they have a great beach area as well.Just have to be carefull crossing HWY 169 to get to the beach.

Twin Pines was ok as well, they have a great beach with a water trampoline.
But again you have to cross 169.

Rocky reef has nice cabins, but nothing for the kids to do, same with Cosy Cove and Bobs RV park.

I heard Walleye Dundys is ok,there are several resorts on the South end as well.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
