Hey punk, you forgot something

Ok, so this will be a venting and not really a report. I had my ice auger stolen in the parking lot of WalMart today. Yep, I'm ticked. I do understand that I'm too trusting (stupid) when it comes to leaving things is my truck. Guess with the price of heating the home this winter, I may be done ice fishing for the year. Oh, by the way, if you're reading this and you took my auger, call me. I have the extension and cover for the blades in my garage. You will need them more than I do now.

Just once I'd like to catch somebody pissing with somebody elses stuff and catch them by surprise. I'd take out all the penned up frustration I have over all the crap I've had pissed with. I've had two doors ripped off my fish houses, I never have anything in there so I just quit locking the door. Sometimes I've got my auger in my pickup at work, I should probably watch that.

WalMart said I had to call the police and their security department would work with the police. I reported it and the officer went inside. I had to go back to work, but he called an hour later and said they have the video where a car pulls up to my Ranger and pulls the auger from it. (Small station wagon, dark in color possibly blue or green, maybe a Ford Escort with the front license plate not centered. The guy goes into the store but they don't get a good enough shot of him to really ID him.) The officer called last night and said that is very little to go on. He suggested I call around to pawn shops and contact my insurance company. So, at this point, it doesn't look good for recovery, but who knows. He may call, with the cold coming this week, he may need that auger extension!

It was the Detroit Lakes WalMart. About 2:00 in the afternoon. Half way accross the parking lot in row 3.

To bad a guy couldn't get a snap shot of the vehicle by your truck, from the vid., then put it on a flyer with some other info. and hang them all around town, plus when out on the lake, hand them out to some folks out fishing.

Can you try getting a copy of the tape? I would bring it to your favorite computer geek and see if he or she can enhance it and try to get a number.

Today, any HS kid can do it.

No, WalMart will only let the police department view the tapes. I think the police probably have better things to do than run errands for me. But, hey, as long as I'm here can I whine some more? Found out today that I have a $500 decuctable on my insurance. Not much good for a $450 auger. And, as if I need more to complain about, My Big Buddy heater, like everyone else's, doesn't work properly. I went to L&M Fleet to see what could be done. They said Mr. Heater has acknowledged a problem and had given them an 800 number for us to call and make arrangements to send it in for repairs. Called the number and the lady informs me that as of Monday they are no longer taking them. They have found a bigger problem that makes them dangerous to use. If you have one, you should not use it until they figure out what to do next. They are working with some government agency deciding whether they can fix the things or if they should be totally recalled. If you have one of these things, you should call the 800 number. They will be putting notices in the paper and on the news but if you call them, they will get some information from you and contact you personally. The decision will be made about February 1st. It's ok that my new fangled, state of the art, EXPENSIVE, heater is a paper weight cause I can't drill any holes anyway!

The number for Mr Heater is 1-800-251-0001.

First, it is the "Big Buddy" only. Model numberMH18B. It won't run on high heat. It has something to do with the gas pressure messed up and gas not being lit but coming out of the unit when running. Gotta admit, I was in a bit of a daze (thinking,"hummmm, just another $150.00 well spent on my part) while she's explaining this to me. Best to call if you have one of these.

I had one of these as well, but recieved it broken from Cabelas and returned it a couple days before this mess came about, what luck!!! I heard that when run on high, the gas lines would freeze and not let the gas burn and ultimately leak out elswhere. I've also heard that the pilot light always went out. Maybe I'll wait and get one in a year or two after they fix the kinks.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
