Destination 5 of the 2005 ICE Series...

Rush Lake - Saturday, February 12th

CJ's on Rush Access

ICE Series Info

Rush Lake holds trophy fish of all species. If you want monster bluegills then Rush is the place. It might take some effort to find them, but if you do they are bulls! Rush is also home to a lot of walleyes, pike and crappies too. A lot of nice weights should be brought to this event. A lot of area and a lot of great structure.

I would also like to welcome Boy Scout Troop 114 to the Rush Lake event. The boy scouts are going to join us for a fun filled day on the ice. I think we're going to see a lot of future fishing pro's and diehards at this event smile.gif I'm really looking forward to the Rush Lake event!!

Who's all planning on attending the Rush event?

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

I am interested in attending, but I've never fished an event before on the water, hard or soft. I'm planning on hitting a tourney on Forest the week before this one. Although that one is just all about the prizes, not the fishing. It gets way too crowded to even think about catching any quality fish.

Since I live in Forest Lake, the trip to Rush would be a pretty quick one, and from what I've seen of the Ice Series on this site, it looks like an event not to be missed. Might give me a chance to meet some of the folks on this site too!

I would like to attend. How do I sign up? How much does it cost and what does the entry fee cover?

Unfortunately, I might not be able to make this one. We'll see how things turn out during the next month.

FishingwithJake-

You can sign up 1 of 2 ways. You can either register on-line by clicking this link Register for I.C.E. Series , or you can just show up the day of the I.C.E. Series event and register there. You can also mail in your registration and you'll find that info on the link I mentioned earlier.

If you register early, it be $10. If you register at the day of the event, it will be $15.

The entry fee basically covers your entry into the tournament with a chance to win a trophy for 1st & 2nd place and a chance at winning the biggest fish trophy. You'll also get a chance at the sponsor prize give-aways.

There are some great items to be given away. For example, at Winnibigoshish last weekend- Marcum LX-3, Otter Den fishhouse, Nilsmaster 6" hand auger, Stone Legacy Revolution Rod Bags, JRs tackle Rod Bags, Beaver Dam tip-up, Thorne Bros rods, Lazy Jiggers, Scenic Tackle & JRs tackle, and many other great prizes were given away. You don't have to count on your fishing skill to win any prizes, it is all based on a random drawing so everyone has a chance of walking away with a great prize.

You can pick the minds of FishinMinnesota ProStaff, check out what they use, and possibly get some guiding from the staff at each event.

I also forgot to mention it is an all around good time on the ice.

wolfboy,

I'm looking forward to meeting you. Make sure you stop by and say hi and we can chat. But, if you want the real master-mind behind Rush Lake you're going to want to talk with BDR. Brian has caught more trophy fish out of Rush then anyone else I know! Brian will be there as well and we'll be working together taking people out on the ice to different spots.

Hey I was just planning on following Cory for the day grin.gif

J/K We should be able to put a plan together to get some people on the fish.

How bout some trophy Sheephead!

I have been fortunate on Rush for some real triphies. 50" ski, 47" ski, 30"+ walleye, 43" Pike, numerous 13-14" Crappies, We should see some dandy fish brought in for this one.

Anyone planning on doing some pre-fishing on Rush in the next couple of weeks? It's about a 20-30 minute drive for me, so I am able to jump up whenever I have some spare time.

Yep, Rush Lake is located west of Rush City on the opposite side (west side) of 35. Take 361/CR-1 west off of 35. Follow CR-1 until you get to CR-7 (Rush Point Drive) and go left. Stay on CR-7 and you will bend to the right and eventually go past the south end of East Rush and then the south end of West Rush. After you pass the south end of West Rush you are going to want to take a right on CR-4 (Acacia Trail). Just follow CR-4 and the access will be down on your right.

There are a couple other ways to get there but I think this one might be the easiest to follow with the least amount of turns and such...

Matt Johnson

I can actually make two in row for the ice series. I had a blast at the Minnetonka event catching a 42" musky (too bad musky are not counted, because that 20 plus pound fish could easily have won), and meeting up w/guys like Holehopper, Mnfishinguy, and Metrojoe. It was good to see future fisherman like Metrojoe's kids land a couple of pike and win some prizes. I hope to meet a few more new people at this event.

Chow for now,

GF

I sent a couple to Matt Johnson, so I think he is going to post them. She was a real beaut and my first natural strain musky that I ever caught. Now I finally realize why all those people fish for musky.

Chow for now,

Wow! That's a nice Muskie! That's getting me pumped for Rush this weekend. I'll keep my flasher spoon on-hand...just in case! See you all there this weekend.

Get those flasher spoons ready!

Rush is also one of the better large Pike lakes I have ice fished. Panfish should be fairly cooperative. Crappies are very abundant and usually predictable. There is an excellent Walleye population, but it would be the first thing I would do in the morning if I planned to get any.

I have fished Rush quite a bit, as my parents live there, and I will be there to share info and hopefully point people in the right direction.

Is there a bait store in the area similar to the situation on Medicine with harty's that would benefit from a plug or two and a bit of business on Saturday morning. Also want to make sure that it is open for business this early as I got a "rude awakening" last weekend at my planned stop! (please include directions if there is one)

Matt-BDR,

Recommended bait options for Rush? Is this a crappies with minnows or waxies or both? Shiners or fatheads for wally's? I know this is an open ended question but wondering what you will picking up and would recommend to us Rush novices. Thx!

Hey Tripleplay, How do you like the new portable?

Rush Point Store is a great place to get bait.

I've got to get it put together this week so I can try it out on Saturday. Of course it wouldn't bother me if the weather was nice enough to not even take it out of the truck!

Just me at Rush on Saturday. Are you going to target northerns again early? I'd kind of like to try to catch a walleye through the ice (not counting URL or LOW) this year so thinking of starting there--then on to northerns and/or crappies.

To be honest I don't know if I'm going to make this event. I know the kids are feeling a little ice fishing burn out, so if I do go I may be flying solo myself.

I've fished Rush many times for panfish, great sunfish lake, but I've never tried for northerns.

I'll be using maggots or plain plastics for pannies and probably jigging a spoon tipped with a minnow head for pike. Suckers and shiners on tip-ups will work well for pike as well.

BDR knows the lake better than I do and he's spent a lot more time out there. Maybe he can suggest a few options...

crazy.gif Oh Great...you planted the seed Tripleplay. It only took about 15 minutes.....I got a lake map spread out on my desk and I'm looking over potential pike locations. Hope the boss don't walk in.

Man.....I think I'm sick. smirk.gif

All right Brian, let's have it........where are the hot spots for pike?

Say Matt, how'd ya do on Medicine the other day? My son and I caught quite a few sunfish and crappies but nothing of any real size.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
