1st time in sleeper/Zipple

Recommended Posts

I am going up the 16th and 17th to Zipple bay with my dad and two sons aged 9 and 11. It will be a first for all of us in a sleeper house. I fished LOW just once before last December in a portable but I am really looking forward to taking my boys, and my dad up. Anyone else gone through zipple bay and any advice on what they are biting on right now? Also how do you like their sleeper houses, service, etc?

Thanks ~piker

We'll be up the 14th and 15th in a sleeper. Was up last year 2 times and did well. The sleepers are fine, it was -45degrees on the way up and the house was warm, only had one hole that was hard to keep from freezing alittle. We were in 28fow used fatheads on jigs off the bottom, Vex was needed and were able to to get them to chase it up. Red and pink glows seems to work best. Also did some jigging w/spoons and got some more active fish, Nothing big, but good eaters! You should have a great time! Good luck! smile.gif

You guys will have a blast! I still remember my 1st trip to LOTW at Zipple with my uncle like it was yesterday.

Someone from Zipple will check on you once or twice during the day to make sure all is well.

Gold jigs, and glowing jigs in various colors seem to do well.

Bring some hand wipes and good toilet paper because you'll be pooping in a bucket with a plastic bag liner. blush.gif I always bring a coleman type lantern, because the poop house will likely be a small fish house you'll have to walk to(not far). The poop house won't be heated or lighted so the coleman helps in many ways.

You will catch a pout or 2 after dark but, the action isn't fast and furious so, bring some activities for the boys. If your not swilling beers and playing cards the night can get a little long.

Sleeping on the ice is totally cool! The ice cracks and shifts all night. If it's a clear night you'll never see so many stars.

Good luck and have fun!

My girlfriend and I stayed in a sleeper up on Lake of the Woods before christmas. I highly recommend bringing a portable carbon monoxide detector with you. The heater in the house we stayed in didnt work right. The guys from the resort told us to run the stove burners to keep warm. Next thing you know our carbon monoxide detector was going off. We ended up having to leave a day early. If it wasnt for the portable carbon monoxide detector that we bought at Target on the way up, we probably would have died.

Just got back from Zipple...the morning started out O.K., a litttle slower than I like it , but managed to sort through the little, little ones and end up with a limit of eyes and saugers...the walleyes kept were all 14 to 15inches...(2 14 inchers and 2, 15 inchers) saugers were 13 1/2" to 16 inches...you really had to work em to get a bite....a friend of mine 70 yards away didn't catch a single fish over 11 inches all day!! Orange and chartruse glow devil with a chub under the bobber line and a similar colored buckshot rattle jig tipped with a shiner head on my jigging line worked for me. I was in about 24 feet, Nick said they had been doing best in 19 - 20ft the past few days....Roads are in great shape...hats of f to Nick and Deanna and the crew!

Thanks for the replies/advice guys. I appreciate it. Especially on what the "toilet facilities" are like and the carbon monoxide detector. I am planning on bringing up some games, etc for the boys for the evening. I also planned on leaving a rattle reel or two down for some poute at night. Who knows, maybe a rouge walleye will bite at night up there.

Thanks again ~piker

Just got back from the big lake today. We had real good luck on 5 mile.Limited on walleye sauger and caught a bunch of 14 15 inch perch.Orange and white was good for us.Gold jigs have always caught me a bunch of fish there to.Haven't been to zipple this year but last winter i limited everytime.Jigging seemed to be the only way they would bite the vexlar helped us get some fish to.Shiners and chubs always seem to work good.We had best luck about 2 inches from bottom.I talked to some people that were at zipple this weekend some did good and some didn't hope you can hit it hot.different colors and jigging and you should be able to find what theyre bitting on and have a blast, good luck.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
