Mountable Size?

Hey Guys. I was up on Mille Lacs Sunday night with a friend and ran into some big fish. I'm mainly a bass fisherman but occasionally fish walleye. One of the walleye I caught was a 28.5 incher that I took a picture of and released it. I guess I'm wondering how many people would have considered mounting the fish if you were in my shoe's considering the largest walleye I caught previously was 19 inches? I'm kind of wishing I would have. Are 28+ inchers common on Mille Lacs? I guess bass fishing has me CPR'n too much. Thanks to all who reply.

If you have good pics you can have a replica made. I would not keep anything under 30" and with the replicas you really do not need to. P.O. Now if your wife catches a 28" Walleye she would rather throw you in the water over the fish. Thus I have a 28"er on the wall.

I am still trying to decide if I am going to get a 27.5" replica made. I caught it on Mille Lacs, but this fish was just beautiful. Huge dorsal fin and great big fish for 27.5", without weighing it is tough to tell but this fish was easily in the 9lbs class. I have a pic I can send if you want to see it.

Sure beats the hell out of the 28.5" I caught during the death summer that barely went 6lbs!

Ya this was a fat pig too. It weighed 9.3 pounds. We also caught a 27 incher but it was much more skinnier and weighed 6.7

Frogs I don't want to tell you what to do or make you accomplishment seem less important, but 28 inch walleye are quite common on Milly. In fact your odds of getting one over 28 are not much worse than getting one between 14 and 17 inches. This information is specific to Mille Lacs, on many other lakes 28 incher would be a trophy. There really is a huge number of 27-30 inch walleye in Mille Lacs right now. Also big Mille lacs walleye historically tend to run a little light for there length and that has been the case again this year. Most Mille lacs 28.5 inch fish have been going about 7 to 7.5 pounds. A really rare fish in Mille Lacs would be a true 31" I am still looking for her.

30+ for me. Still looking for that one.
If you fish Mille Lacs as much as I do the 27.5 is far from a rare fish. The 28+ is not the easiest fish to come across but you will get it eventually. Great catch for sure, thanks from the fisherman for releasing her.

I like the replica idea. You have the dimensions and photograph, can have one made at any timeif you so desire. Catch and Release. That is how you possibly caught the 28.5" and in
order for her to get to 30" or better, we have to put them back in order for the next fisherperson to have the same dilemma as you are having now. Replica is the way to go.
Order a copy, basically what you are doing anyway without the hassle.

i fish mille lacs alot and have caught tons of fish up to 27.5, but only 3 over 28 inches in the last couple years on mille lacs. i don't think a 28 is any more common on mille lacs than other fisheries of its caliber. a trophy fish is whatever you consider a trophy not a standard weight or length set by a group, of people. replicas have realy come around and is a great way to go for everyone.

I love pulling lead core but usually don't pull it out until later in the season.  Can you share depth and speed numbers that were working with lead?  Thanks.

Heading up early Saturday morning. Going to be a short, discombobulated trip this year. Starting with 4 of us but one has to leave to watch his son play in state (WI) baseball tournament on Tuesday. Rest of us are only there until Wednesday. Kind of disappointing but I'm thinking we'll have to make a trip in September as well.    Forecast calls for wind!

Those are cormorants and they are aggressive fish eaters.  I saw more last weekend than typical on vermilion.  Pretty common  on the east end but I don’t usually see much of any on the west which is where we were.  They eat a lot of fish and surprisingly large fish for their size so they aren’t great for the fish populations.     I can’t believe how fast the water warmed up.  We were seeing up to the high 70’s last weekend.  Typically mid June is mid to upper 60’s.  The Muskies didn’t seem to be too fired up with the quick warm up.  The ones we moved were lazy and would not go in to the turn.  Hopefully some more normal temps this week help.
