Murdock

Recommended Posts

Now please don't laugh to hard, but in an attempt to save time, I am looking for your recomendations as to a good launch that will take place in the very near future and later in the fall. Preferably an evening launch and we would be staying at local Super 8 or other type of hotel. Thanks in advance for your recomendations.

Hello Derek, Believe me I would, but I already have another fishing trip planned for that exact weekend in Alexandria. I am thinking a trip with 3 -6 guys, most likely wanting to stay at the resort who offers the launch. Fisher's resort looks pretty nice. Any other suggestions.

Murdock, I checked out a lot of resorts before acually chossing Fishers.I found that they are all close to the same price, all have 4,6,and 8 hour trips with 4 being the most common.
The dererence is the size of the launch, and whether they have a BBQ grill or not.
Most didn't have one and most all had at least one pontoon launch. Some didn't go out after dark because they didn't have lights.

I think if you chose any one that is listed in the resort locator at the top of this page you will be happy. That's where I found most of the resorts I checked out as well.

Sienic Bay(south side) has a nice launch,Rocky Reef(South East side), St Albons(North west side),Barnecal Bills(North side), Fishers(North East side),and Johnsons Portside (South East side).
Just to name a few.

Good luck in Alex on the 20th,used to ice race quads right in front of Big Ole up there.

After trying several, I've settled on Myr Mar Marina. They have two boats, both with night lights. Phil, the owner, and Paul his brother, know that lake better than anyone I've met. They can't make the fish bite, but they work their butts off to get you on fish. I've seen other launches follow them around the lake instead of doing their homework. They have a guy named Mike who sometimes takes out the boats. DO NOT go out with him. BAD TRIP. When I called this morning to reserve spots for us, I was told that many people making reservations request either Phil or Paul, and many request not to have Mike. Myr Mar does not have a grill or a reputation as a party barge. They are known for catching fish. Good luck.
Practice CPR. Catch, Phillet, and Refrigerate.

I highly recommend you check the Resort Locator link at the top of this page. There are different types of launch trips available depending on what you prefer.

There are links to the Resorts who have launch services. The ones linked to are very good places to go out of. Pick one the meets your style and budget.

Rick, I agree. Check out the ones that are on this website. One thing to consider; Mille Lacs is so large that no one can know the whole lake. Pick out where you want to fish and find a recommended launch for that area. Anyone who claims to know the whole lake is fooling themselves.

I've had good luck with Terry's. Other's may disagree, but they have always been good with me.

Murdock, you grow up in Murdock?

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!! I did view the resort locator at the top of the page and found some very good options. Fishers Resort seems to fit our needs best. Anyone been on a Launch thru Fishers Resort and is so, how was the fishing and should we be asking for a specific launch captain? Should I be making reservations for launch and cabin now for a late Sept. trip?
Legendelite, yep, I did grow-up in Murdock. How do you know about this one horse town?

I've been on launches out of Fishers. Can't go wrong. Good captains, nice boats, nice resort.

Hey Legendelite, Toss me an email at
[email protected]. I also have a large # of relatives in that area. (Mostly with last name of Collins). Give me some or your relatives last names and maybe we can hook up on the water some where.

Murdock,

I think that my relatives were 1/2 the population between Murdock and Kerk. I've been out there many times...even DeGraff!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
