I'm going out to Lura tonight. I heard that the walleye bite is real slow, but its the closest lake for me so I thought I would give it a try. Anyone else heard anything?

What end of the lake did you fish? I haven't fished out there for a few days. It was slow last weekend. We fished on the Deleven end.

Yep the new house works good. We were on the Delevan end also. Went out again last night. Not even a flag. Thats 2 nights in a row either we suck or the weather turned them off. You need not reply to that Nuts. I know your answer, but I do blieve you got skunked on Monday as well.

Maybe you'll have better luck with the pheasants in Iowa this weekend.

I got a nice plump 18" out there this evening. First time ever on the lake. Im gonna have to get the boat out there in May and learn the lake a bit better. Kind of a crapshoot for me getting set up today.

Some people have told me for that most of open water Lura is so weedy every inch of the lake becomes unfishable. Anyone here know this too be true? And if so when does this become the case? Can a guy fish in may?

Hey Nutz how come you never post any of your skunks on here. I heard there was one in your fish house last night. I guess crappies and northerns are biting on German. Good reports coming from the east end of Francis for northerns. Right by town

To quote the great Babe Ruth - "Every strike out gets me that much closer to my next home run."

The next time I call you with a report on how the fishing is, it will only be because I'm out of bait from catching so many.

I am, however, not 0-2 like you. Sat. was productive.

A couple buddies went out on Saturday and drilled holes all the way across the lake and couldn't find a crappie, but some guys were catching them on German on saturday.

rod man you didnt miss it. the west end looks like a city . they are catching some crapies, but mostly tip up fishing for northerns on the east and west ends of the lake. if you are familiar with the transition from 20ft to 50+ midway across the lake there is about 6 houses setup on the drop off catching crappies, but it is a light bite some good fish mixed in. I talked to those guys on sat. morning. We worked the lake mainly for eyes, no luck. hope this helps. Best crappie bite ive heard is on german for size and numbers....

Hey guys maybe you can answer this question. I was on Lura friday from 4-10 pm. From 5 until we left the vexilar was lit up with fish the whole time. A lot of them 3 ft off bottom. We only had shiners and large fatheads but did catch 2 crappies. Im wondering if you guys know what i was marking? Could i have possibly been on a pile of crappies? Or was it baitfish?

j.w. good question. ive wondered the same thing on lura, there are also alot of bass on that lake too, but i cant imagine them not taking either shiners or fatheads. if you caught a couple of crappies, that would be my guess.Let me know if you catch a bunch, dont need to know where you are, just curious because it has happened to me as well, and i can never get them to take anything. In a lake that shallow baitfish are usually fairly easy to identify with the vex...

The perch in Lura are thick, from what I've seen. I would assume, what you were marking on the Vex, were those little perch. I could be wrong though.

Lura Lake is loaded with bullheads. I would guess it was either those, little perch, or crappies.

I know when we were fishing last year, if we used fatheads we'd have the little perch tripping our flags all day long. Some were so small, they'd get hooked but they weren't big enough to trip the flag so when we'd go out to check the tip-ups, there'd be a little 4" perch on the other end.

I didnt think the perch would move that much after dark but i could be wrong. I also figured if they were bullheads we would have caught them on fatheads. I did try a couple small jigging spoons with a minnowhead and never got a bite.

j-w the billies in Lura are 2-4in long I think they might be forage at that size. I know that we have caught bass with them in there guts partly digested.

hope this helps

I found the skunk. He was tucked up way under the house. Last night I caught a 24 inch walleye.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
