Questions about the "EXTRAVAGANZA"

Recommended Posts

This will be my first time to this event and I was wondering what time is a good time to get there at? Is the check in fairly slow or do they move you along pretty quickly? They say that you can reserve holes after 8 but otherwise to they just put you at a spot or what? Are you able to bring your own beer or booze with you. Cuz I hope so. How many people usually attend the fishing part of the event. Sorry for all of the ?'s, and thanks to whomever replies.

Andy, everything is run very smoothly. Not much waiting in line, but I would suggest getting there between 8 and 9 a.m. (via bus from one of the pick-up spots). There will be about 20,000 plus holes drilled and about 14,000 fishermen/women. You can bring alcohol, but it has to be plastic or cans. No glass bottles. You will have a blast, tell you friends about it.

One other thing, if you are skilled (lucky wink.gif) enough to catch a fish please be prepared to transport that fish in a bucket or bag of water up to the weigh scale. (at least enough water to cover the gills)the Brainerd chapter of the MN Walleye Alliance and local DNR officials will be releasing, or attempting to release all fish that come to the scales.

Round up some fishing buddies

Dress warm

Show up early to get a the spot you want

Bring with you only what is needed

You will have a blast!

Good luck!!

Hope to see you in the weigh line

Be sure to bring an ice chisel. The holes are predrilled the day before and two years ago it took almost an hour to get you hole nicely opened up. Other than that come early and dress warm. It is a great event.

Great suggestion on the C&R bags (or buckets), Chris. Everyone out there has a five-gallon bucket, right? And most of the fish caught during the contest easily fit in one. Be good to see a few more fish safely released during the contest.

Good luck everyone. Should be another fun-filled fish catching free-for-all! smile.gif

Hey, thanks for the info. I can't wait to get up there. This sounds like a great event. Good luck to all who attend.

Hi Ajmurf, like the boys already told you it is a very fun event. Be sure to bring warm clothes. Some years it's been very nice out, others have turned a bit nasty so be prepared for any weather we may have. The use of the shuttles works out great and they run constantly back and forth all day, so you can leave at any time. One of the parking lots is accross the street from our shop here in Nisswa, about 1.5 miles from the contest. So its a short ride. The other is down at the BIR racetrack. Be sure to stop in and grab a free contest area lakemap, plus we will have lots of bait specials that day to get you set up. Good Luck and have fun at the contest!

All right, sorry to bother you all again. We just recieved our tickets for the tounament, but all of the tickets have only one guys name and address on them. Do any of you know if we can change that at the registration booth or do we have to call someone? I already emailed the jaycee's for info, but I don't know when they will get back to me. Thanks for your time and sorry for bothering you all again.

Only 11 more days......

You must mean the labels they send along with the tickets. Those are for the rafle tickets they sell on the ice(convenience). Your friends can hand write the info or print their own labels ahead of time. You'll want to lable the actual ticket as well so that if you get separated from your ticket you have a chance at getting it back. This happens at least a few times during the contest. Especially on windy days.

Good Luck!

Dress as warm as possible, you can always take it off. Park your vehicle at the shuttle areas, if you drive to hole in the day you will be sorry! The shuttles are very good. Bring a ice chisel. Dont drink booze, you will get colder, drink something hot. Good luck

Can you purchase the entry fee tickets on the ice the morning of the contest or do you have to buy them before hand?

Yes you can! I believe someone will be selling them at S&W on the day of the contest.

Jason at sportland, what time will you guys be opening, and what time do the shuttles start up? Thanks!

I'll be open for business at 6:00 am the morning of the contest. Someone from the contest will be here selling tickets and we will have lots of minnows for everyone. Plus we will have contour maps of the contest area free of charge.

The shuttles usually start running at 8:00 am from the church parking lot accross the road from my bait shop. The shuttles are yellow school busses, no trailers.

By the looks of the forecast the temps are going to break and could be 10-20 degrees. Tropical compared to last week.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
