the guy at rush point store tells me it's the best walleye bite he's seen in eight years!! I've been there three times and not caught a single fish. from what i've seen it's the worst crappie bite in the last 3 years for sure. the first time I went out this year my roomate caught 1 crappie the second my brother caught 2 crappies. I figured the third time out i'd get one for sure, nope. So i'd like some tips too! I tried the deep spots out from cj's and all around cigar island. is the guy at rush point a nutball or am I just that bad of a fisherman??? I'm headed to some new ice!!

I stopped at Marv's Minnows and heard that the walleyes were also coming through the holes fast and furious. Monday night at the landing we talked to a group of guys that said they caught a 10 lb, 27", 22", and a 20" walleye. We set up in 30+ fow like they said and still have not caught a walleye. My first fish to come through the hole was a nice bluegill and since then I have caught about 35 crappies. The fish are much smaller, but I have managed about 12 keepers. A tiny jig with a waxie started doing the trick for me. Hope this helps and maybe someone can offer all of us some more help for the walleyes.

From the Rush Point Store site:

12-30 Weather update...rain, sleet and ice..roll overs on the main roads this morning...but still see full size pick ups and cars out at the houses by Wilson and the eastern shores of west. Larry just called the county, apparently if you touch the brakes going into the public access, you'll spin out. Dirt roads are worse than tar, they will send out a truck sometime today. Crappie bite continues to be huge, guys in some of the deeper waters not faring as well as the 22-25 feet people. Walleye still right in there all over the lake on crappie minnows...

The walleye bite seems to have slowed from what we had seen. WE had been doing excelent up until this weekend. The pressure may have slowed some of our spots, so we keep looking for new ones. The crappies are going well, although they are not that great of size, but you can easily make a meal! Good Luck out there! If ya see a purple otter with a blue polaris two up snowmobile stop by and say hi!

The bit WAS good but you had to go through a dozen 12 inchers to get one keeper. That makes the future look good but it seems like it's that way every year. Its like they never grow up. Good luck anyway. DAD-N-EYE

Last year, when the smaller Crappies were in the Cigar hole, we moved across the hole toward the channel, just off the weed bar, where it drops into 17-18 feet(as you look across at the channel, it's to the right, towards the first cabin on that side). We didn't get the numbers that we got at the hole, but they were all 9" and above with a few nice Sunnies mixed in. We used one set line with fatheads, and jigged maggots on the other.

Luck

I got on the ice Thursday at about 1. The public access was pure ice and all I could do was just slide down and hope for the best. The roads were fine when I went home last night, but the lake was in rough shape. Lots of water on the ice. I fish out of my buddy's house out in the deep hole right out from the access. Stop by and say hi, it's the one with the silver/red trim. I think we might move it next wednesday for some walleyes or just less traffic. If anyone has some room in a portable and wants to find some walleyes or nice gills, give me a call 763-226-4526. I have everything but the portable, I'll be back on the ice Wed. afternoon.

I was out on W. Rush on Sat. night. We got a few keeper crappies, but action was faily slow. There was a TON of people out there. Some were driving and some weren't. Ice was about 13-14 inches. We were on the edge of the big "city" out from the access.

Can I cut the quick connect from the vexilar charger and then cut alligator clips off my lithium charger and switch them with no problems? I know there would be no issue with the alligators on the vex charger. Curious about the lithium with quick connect. The new 20 has the quick connect.

On a lake near Sugar. Got on to some great sunfish they were deeper than I thought 22 feet deep suspended at 14 feet. Nonstop for 2 hours a black tungsten jig worked best I did try plastics for a bit for building up confidence but the fish showed otherwise quickly. Went back to 3 euro worms 4 was to many . Then I got a 10.5 bluegill my first one and wouldn't you know it my phone was about 2 blocks away. So I let her go not going to keep a fish out of water to get a glory picture. Oh well next time. Get out while you can the lakes were good with the warm up but who knows in a couple of weeks. That was on Friday. Drilled a few holes for an older gentleman that just wanted to fish A while I was glad to help out enjoyed chatting with him. Then went out today almost the same thing but unfortunately near a community spot and within 2 hours everyone was out there and a dog peed on my fish house was not happy threw snow on the house cleaned when i got home I left soon after very rude people unfortunately and the fishing died right away oh well.

Having fished this lake from shore in the summer and my daughter also and did real well, I can't figure why ice fishing is so bad. 2 full days and nothing! 3" perch galore. Moved around and had my camera. Didn't see any life forms whatsoever!!!!! Never coming back. Hardly a soul on the lake on a 43 degree.Sat.??? What?????👎👎👎

Heading to the Virginia Mn area Ice fishing in a few weeks. I've fished the Duluth area most of my life but finally spreading out a bit.
Not hoping to get anyones "spot".
How are ice conditions? Anywhere to stay away from safety wise?
Any dead lakes that would be a waste of my time on a limited trip?
      Thanks yall

Fished hard for 3 days on Big Stone Lake and the bite was very, very tough.  The nice Marked a lot of fish and just couldn't get them to bite. Did manage some dandy perch and trophy gills,(released) but not a lot of numbers.  Saturday late afternoon we stuck 3 gills over 10".  My nephew had one that was at least 10 1/2" but released it before I could measure or get a pic.  Sunday we had 2 more at or just under 10".  Had to downsize to get bit.  Did catch a couple on set lines with fatheads.   Spoons didn't get bit often.  Tungsten jigs or flies tipped with plastics or eurolarvae got most of the action.
Found fish in or near basin areas near shallower rock structures.  We would drill, drill and then drill some more.  Once we found fish we would make smaller moves or wait out schools cruising through the area. Travel conditions were excellent.   Just had to watch out for the occassional drift or old plowed road.  Here are a few pics from the weekend.

Getting a MinnKota Precision charger for my new boat, a 1875 Pro Guide. It will have a 24 volt Ulterra on the bow and 24 volt Vantage on the stern. The batteries are group 31 AGMs. I've always had 10 amp per bank chargers in the past. I will be spending more time on the water with this boat so draining the batteries down more. Is the 15 amp per bank better, worse or no difference? I am leaning towards the 15 amp for quicker charging. Getting a 3 bank so the starting battery will be topped off also.

Stopped by the dealership yesterday. The Helis 10 or 12 will fit but only if the gimbal mount is attached directly to the folding section. Any mount will make it to tall. I guess I'll be taking the graph off, not to big a deal.

Well, gave Boulder a try today. Went out from the dam access. Some open water behind dam. Couple trucks drove out 😬 I did not! Foot travel, and not knowing anything about this lake made for great day to enjoy the weather. Only caught 1 perch and 1 walleye.

Wow ... the back held up today!!   Always forget to take pics UGH ... wish i had taken some, just a great day on the ice.  met some very nice people ... and enjoyed the great weather.  brought home 7 Sunnies, 2 crappies, and a large mouth.  Missed a bunch and caught numerous border line pannies.   Great great time.
