Mudflats?

Anybody been out on the mudflats yet? I'm going up next Monday and would like to give the flats and gravel a try.

I talked to a guide in Malmo at a gas station/bait shop. He took some guy to the mud and they got a 28" and a couple 26" and more with leeches in 2 hours. No idea which flat and that was last week any ways.

I know, doesn't help much, but there's hope

I was out on 7 mile Sat. and my 10 yr old daughter caught a 25.5". We saw many other fish landed as well. There were people all over the lake but I didn't have the binoc's out to see how they were doing.

For those of you reading this and havent fished Mille Lacs before here is a good starting point for you.

7 mile flat
9 ft leader (6 to 8 lb)
pink gamakatso leach hook
jumbo leach
depending on the conditions I use a 1/2 oz to a 1 oz bottom bouncer.

Troll slowly, almost a vertical presentation.

I fished 8 mile flat and shaws reef. Got a 27 incher on the reef.

Caught 5 fish on the flat. A 27 1/2 incher and a 27 where the biggest. Nothing under 20 inches. The big fish where on the flats, stacked up on the breaks. 10 foot snell red hook 1 glow bead, and jumbo leech. I fished for 3 hours. Bug hatch was nuts.. Good Luck..

I'm sure opinions on this topic will differ, but what is everyone's take as far as dragging/not dragging the bottom while fishing the mud? I've always held the believe that using a 3-way swivel to keep from dragging bottom is best, that way you don't 'cloud up' the bottom

While rigging I try to never drag the bottom but make contact and than hold it about a half foot up

Out yesterday on 7-Mile and Shermans. 12 walleyes (13.5" - 24"). Caught a 21" female still full of eggs?

We used everthing from leech and a plain hook to crawler harness w/blades. Seemed to be a bit scattered yet. 1 or 2 here, then move and get another 1 or 2.

All were caught off the edge of the flats in 30+ feet.
