Smallie Report

Recommended Posts

Was a somewhat tough openner. I got a 18.5 and Cyb got a 17 and 16 and we only saw three others all day. The excitement was provided by Ski's; I had two break me off in very shallow water and another get off. Cyb had one of the one's that broke me off on a spinnerbait. Also got a few small Pike, saw a huge Pike and Cyb got a 6lb eye, went back of course. We saw a lady catch one about 5lbs off a dock and take it to the wood shed. Hmmm.

Smallies we got were on docks or weeds or both.

I think the smallies are moving in, but the fronts that have gone through may have made them nervy? Nothing in the shallows really or any beds to be seen. i got 3 15" males ( i assume) saturday, and a couple more on sunday. was pretty tough, I knew some other guys out and their success was similar to all of ours on this post, 4-5 per person per boat. fish were caught on various baits, i got mine on a 5" husky jerk (red), 4" tube (white/pearl, watermelon), baby 1- firetiger. the other guys got them on similar baits, one of them happened to be a 20"er. most fish were caught in teh 5-8 foot range, and i saw very few if any smallies really cruising teh shallows. i was out of cove for most of the time. Actually we caught some 2-3 pound largemouth too and the big muskies and walleyes we saw kept it pretty interesting as well.

Another note: may fly hatch occurred on teh west side on saturday night, not sure how the smallies are entirely affected by this but the lake is big and there must be some areas that aren't as affected as others.

catch'nwhoppers (and others):
I've heard that some bass fisherman actually see active, healthy walleyes while bass fishing. Any rumor to that? I fish in the detroit lakes area, and this would be a rarity unless its spawning season. just wondering........

Hey Fishlips,
I have seen active walleyes particularly on Mille Lacs when i have been fishing for smallmouth there. i have caught some in schools off weedline structures throwing husky jerks and ripping them in. i have also caught numerous walleyes off some docks that had sand and rock underneathe them, do-nothing docks. kind of wierd, but it only seems like that has happened on mille lacs, not necessarily on other lakes i fish for bass with good walleye populations.

Shore Fished off a Jetti in Vineland. Blanked which was a bit of a surprize. The mayflies were hatching and perch and other baitfish were in one area real thick picking fly's at the surface, but no sign of a predetor fish anywhere. They probably moved in after I left. I so wanted to start smacking em on topwater, but they just were not there.

The smallmouth fishing is heating up. I caught 15 yesterday, with a 22 incher being the largest. It was pushing 7 pounds. Most of the fish were in the 19 to 20 inch range. The bite was alot better in the afternoon, say 2 to 7 PM.

I am more than sure we can work something out Fishfearme. Who are you? My guess is Mike Jacobson from Vikings or this other guy who's name escapes me but I would remember if I heard it from Fishers of Men.

My email is [email protected]
(Believe me, I already have visions of the state record smallie dancing in my head)

I caught numbers of smallies Wed. Tube jigs worked the best.Hammered them in front of Breakers RV park. The reeds and around the island there. Great fishing.. Caught eyes on the flats before dark.

Was out on Sat. in Cove. Got out on the water around 11 or so and ended up leaving around 3. Ended up getting about 12 or so smallies and a couple of largies. Missed a bunch too. Biggest was about a 4lb. Got them on sinkos and the Yankee worm. Saw tons of fish in the shallows and had some limited success catching the ones on the nests. I had better success in casting where I suspect the fish would be holding and letting the bait sit. Didn't throw much else besides plastics. Fun day to be out on the water and will be up again soon.

Went out of Isle today and usually had one fish on a specific type of target. Despite the predicability the fish were skittish and I missed or had follows from many more than I caught. I did end up with 6 fish between 14-19" (17.5,14,17,18,18.5,19.25). Fished from around 5 to 9PM. The texas rigged tube just wasn't the ticket for hooking up when I got bit. Any suggestions? (I switched to a Zoom Super Fluke and my hooking percentage went way up.)

Also tangled with about a 25lb Ski before the hook came out.

Baspastor,
Sounds like a fun monday night! i would say try hooking the tubes tex-posed first, if the hookups still don't happen, maybe go with the hook exposed. I have had a hard teim getting teh hook buried on those smallies with it texas rigged, texposed seemed to increase it. i am thinking of going more exposed hook now though, there really isn't much the bait will get snagged on in the lake when fishing rocks.

Man i love those smallies, just sweet. i'm jealous!

Basspastor,
I have had some great success in the spring with the Yankee worm or the Pre-rigged worm in the spring time. basically this is a bent worm that twist in a circular pattern when you bring it in. It has three exposed hooks that run through the middle of the worm, kind of like a walleye harness. Basically the fish hit the bait and set themselves. You don't need to really even set the hook. The only thing needed for this is a swivel snap and a light rod so that you don't tear out the hooks or break them, it is more of a finesse bait.
Also like catchin' said, the Texposed hook setup works really well to.
when are you going to be out again?

Was out Tues. and Wed. with pretty much the same results, only seeing less but catching a higher percentage. Tonight I broke off at the knot on the biggest one I've come across yet. The fish had more spunk tonight, several jumps and hard battles. I'll most likely be out Fri & Sat.

I will be on the water on Tuesday of next week for a nice long day. Just wondering if anyone else is going to be out there?

Also, haven't heard any reports lately, I assume that the fishing is that good and people are being tight lipped.

Hey Alphid, need a partner in the boat?

Cyb and I were out on Sat. but we couldn't find em. I got two below average size fish.

Question for this knowledgeable group   I've noticed over the past two weeks at the lake that in certain areas there seems to be a ton of black "duck-like" floaters that seem to congregate by tons and stir up the water and then move to another area close by, stir up the water again and move again. I've seen them recently in Greenwood Bay and around Fectos.   Are these cormorants? Are they stirring up the water by fishing?   Thanks

Followed the advice I posted, slip bobbers w rainbows and crawlers in big bay on a dozen humps topping out at 6 to 12'. Caught a few smalles and a couple 12" walleyes. So not very successful but maybe didn't hit the right humps or lake was too calm or wrong time of day - 7:30 11 am. That's why they call it fishin'

I may have to take you up on that. I've been moving for a month and don't even have my boat in the lake yet!

Walleye Report:  Just spent a week on the lake (East end).  The fishing was as hot as the weather with many, many 14-25" walleyes.   Surface Temps: Consistently 70-72 with the recent hot weather.  Swimming was comfortable the past three days.  Depths:  All caught in less than 10 FOW Techniques: Lures - Plastics and jerkbaits.  We bought two dozen leeches but never opened them.  I do regret not watching a bobber dip below the surface.   Tactics: Cast and retrieve lures in sandy bays, over main lake/secondary rocky points, across rocky flats, between sandy flats, and throughout silt/mud bays with shallow weeds.  A little wind and clouds helped but was not always necessary.  And we had lots of random fish.    Advice:  Get out there and fish.  These patterns should hold for the next week-two.  The fish are aggressively feeding in the shallows where they are finding crawfish, shiners, etc.  A fast moving bait is getting hammered.  I literally can't tell you how many times I saw fish INHALE our presentations at the boat.   The population is healthy.  Catch and keep a few and let a bunch of them go.     Good luck.

Lol, if they had enough enforcement in the first place. They may catch them the rest of the season without the tag!
