haven't tried either of those, but those tiny northland rattle spoons seem to be working pretty well for me anyway

You guys fishing out from Bayport? Haven't been out there in a month or so. I have personally only caught one white and the rest blackies. Didn't hit the slabs though. Biggest were two @ 11". I plan on going out this Friday sometime early morning just for some fun, but I might release a couple into the frying pan.

My bad, I meant are you guys fishing that general river section, not necessarily fishing in a specific area. This is actually the first winter I have ventured down to the river and have only fished that portion.

Tommy,

The Bayport pool is where everyone is at. Best thing you can do is get deep and away from everyone. People are still fishing up by highline and the sconi sand across from the point but you will do better staying away from any crowds.

JJB,

I generally don't fish by the crowds anyways. It usually means a lot of fish, but little. I like to search for the fatties. Thanks for the update. Will be down there Fri. morning.

Ice conditions still ok? Where does one need to excercise caution on the river by Bayport this time of year? confused.gif

Was down around bayport yesterday. Started fishing at 8:30 am in 30 feet of water first and caught a 8.5 inch sunfish on a buckshot spoon tipped with waxies. Moved around to the 38-40 feet deep areas and caught some sauger and white bass, but no crappies. The ice was in good shape yesterday. A little soft near the power lines by the warm water discharge. People were catching a few crappies out there. Early in the morning was the best for size from what I heard from talking to others. Only fished there till noon. The drive on area on the south end of bayport will put your shocks through a workout.

I was out there tonight. The drive off in Bayport will do more than test your shocks. There was a feller there with a 2 wheel drive truck that fell through on the edge. His front tires were on dry land, but his rears were under water and he was in need of a tow truck. I didn't have a tow strap, but I was able to give him the phone number for Stillwater Towing. Be very careful getting on and off in Bayport. The spot where he drove was obviously not the best spot to drive off tonight. I am glad it wasn't me. As for the fishing???? I had lots of "lookers" on the vex and managed to coax 7 nice slabs into biting. They will make for a nice family meal. I will also have my two strap with me in the morning when I head back out.

The Bayport landing wasn't very good when I went on this morning and it was quite a bit worse when I got off. I for one won't be driving my truck out there anymore this year. It may still be possibile to do it, but not advisable.

i would agree with that, anyone driving out anymore is a fool hearted individual. no fish is worth your life. i was out friday and got a few crappies but was disturbed by all the dead pike around the landing, some of them were in the 10 lb range and unleaned and clearly dumped, several nice walleyes too! it didn't make alot of sense.

about a dozen from what i saw but the hundreds of birds had already put a dent in them. a buddy of mine was fishing the highlines the day before and talked to turk and he was disgusted by it as well.

I was out there tonight. Used a 2x6 plank from shore at Bayport park to get on without getting my feet wet. 9 crappies landed and one nice 16" eye. Caught a silver bass that went about 3# too. I hate to put away the ice gear, but I am afraid old man winter is just about gone.

  • 3 weeks later...

Fished around the hi-line area yesterday afternoon. Water ranged from 51 degrees MN side, to 55 degrees on sconi side. Found a few crappies,9"-11", willing to bite out from the lagoon by the point on sconi side in 28-32 fow chasing minnows. Could have been better, but i think i got to them a little late.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
