Just got back from washington, about 6-7 inches of good ice. There was about 25 portables out there, spread out all over. Fished about 5 hours and caught around 25 crappies and sunnies. Kept about 10 of them, threw the rest back. Most everything was bitting on ratso's, right off the bottom.

Mr. Sloppy do you know if that ice level is pretty consistent around the lake? I'd like to get out in the next few days at some point.

Thanks ~piker

was out on washington for about 5 hours today, on mud bay. Caught well over 90 sunnies between me and a friend. They were biting very light, but easy enough to see with a spring bobber. Didnt really seem to matter what the lure was, as long as it was small and tipped with a red spike worm. The ice was about 9 or 10, there were a few small trucks and cars out there and lots of ATVs. People are starting to pull out permantents now. Anyone know how the ice is in bakers or around 3rd point?

Whats the size like on those Sunnies, i have a lake around town i can catch a bunch in but they are all little dinky ones, it would be worth the 45 min drive to get some bigger ones, also since ive only fishing Washington a few times which bay is Mud Bay? thanks

mud bay is the one right out from westwood. The sunnies are small, but you have to pick through them and find some keepers outta there. They all seem to be right on the bottom, a few come in about 3 feet off, and those are generally the bigger keeper ones. You can easily get enough to keep in a couple of hours.

I was out tonight by the third point. Only 3 and 4 wheelers and people walking (me). There was about 9-10 inches of ice where I was. I was trying for the "hot" walley bite I had heard about there. No luck. Marked quite a few fish but they were having nothing to do with anything that I dropped down in front of them. They would come up and check the jig out and then go back to the bottom. I used fatheads and tried about 6-7 different jigs with no luck. I did play around with some suspeded fish which I assumed were crappies and they seemed interested in my jig but would not take it. You know it would be nice to follow up on a "hot tip" one time and actually have it pay off!!

Fished the last 4 days on Washington. Started in Bakers bay on Xmas. Picked up 20 nice sunnies in 15 ft. of water. Been in Mud Bay the last 3 days. Easily filled out each day on sunnies. Wax worms about 5 inches off the bottom. I was in 13 feet closer to the narrows. Picked up 1 15" eye on a minnow too. There's 11" of ice pretty much everywhere I drilled. Full size trucks everywhere. (me 4 wheeler)Hope we don't get too warm the next few days as predicted.

WAS OUT YESTERDAY ON MUD BAY WHERE FISHING WAS SLOW. WENT IN 13 FEET OF WATER BETWEEN MUD AND BAKERS ,FISHING WAS VERY GOOD FOR SUNNIES AND A FEW REAL NICE CRAPPIES. HAD TO THROW ABOUT HALF THE SUNNIES BACK , BUT SOME PRETTY NICE KEEPERS.

I was out on third point on tues. eve. in 15' all we caught was small perch and 1 crappie. Got checked by the warden, first time in many years, good to see them doing there job. As usual lots of litter on the ice. Please clean up after yourself and others. I picked up 2 cans on the way out myself. It doesn't take much time and keeps the lake clean.

Just took a drive out to Washington. No time to fish today. People are driving all over. Didn't see any houses froze in or submerged. No open holes. I would certainly be careful after the temps yesterday though. I'll be out there tomorrow with the 4 wheeler. Rumor has it their getting crappies and eyes between grassy and second point in the early evening.

Catmaster1557, I was looking at a map and the deepest it gets off that point is 13 feet. Is there an unmarked hole, or were you farther back into the bay around the 35 foot hole?

I'm sure he was a ways back from the point. I heard they're some crazy people driving right around Squirrels nest point. 12 inches or not, pretty crazy with that yearly ice heave unless you go way out.

Tried mud bay on sun for an hour or so, real slow, so moved to bakers. The crappies and sunnies were hitting very tiny jigs, sometimes tipped with spikes, other times with a minnow. Orange seemed to be the color to go to. Some very nice crappies were caught. Hows 3rd point going? I havent been able to get there yet this year, but want to try tomorrow.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
