Morris Pt. 12/15 Report

Recommended Posts

Went out of Morris Point yesterday. It is a safe area but stay away from Morris gap. shocked.gif 8-10" of ice everywhere with a rough surface (looks like waves were frozen on top). The resort is hauling permanent shacks out with a small jeep. Probably 75 already out there towards pine island. Fishing was awesome. 75 walleye and sauger in 5 hours. Go out to at least 22' of water straight out from the resort. If you have a shack, be sure to bring a 5 gallon bucket and the biggest slush scoop you can find like that hockey stick type or slush inhaler. There is a slush problem under the ice confused.gif. After you drill a hole the slush keeps coming up. It is hard to get your bait down through this stuff. Then if you catch a fish more slush. Anyway, I finally went to a red glow spoon with rattles (with a minnow head)and was able to drop it through the slush. Good luck!

I was out of Morris on 12/14 in 21.5ft. There was about 10", like you said. The lake's not terribly rough, but it's a little choppy. I figured the bite would be better tomorrow. We caught only about 25 fish between three of us, but we had one 26". There will likely be pickup traffic out there next week as there were a few of those little SUV's and there should be over a foot of ice by Sunday AM. I wish I could make it back up there. 4/1 ratio of walleyes to saugers, so there were a lot less dinks. Great location.

Hi Piker,

Did you guys have the slush problem also? I had 5 hours of slush coming up the hole???? Wish I would have brought my slush inhaler!

I was out there last Fri. and noticed the slush problem. You sure opened up a can of worms when you started cleaning the hole, didn't ya?

Actually I did have that same slush problem. I just thought the hole was augered poorly or something. Every fish we caught brought a bunch of slush with it. We caught one nice fish and the slush covered the hole and it's snout got caught on the ice. I had to have my buddy keep the tension on the line and grab it with my hand.

What do you think causes the slush? Is it under the ice all over the place and has nothing to do with poor hole cleaning? Wierd.

There was open water over towards Long Pt until Monday the 13th for sure and it could have stayed open past that yet with the wind. But the NW winds keep blowing the thin ice down and under the ice that is by Morris. Things probably got even worse when we had those 60MPH winds on the 12th. This wind just pushes the thin ice and slush further and further under the strong ice. Maybe some really cold temps will freeze up all that slush under there, or maybe it'll stay that way all year and we could have problems putting on ice near the shore line there.

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
