Ice Fishing Reports!

Recommended Posts

Well we're really picking up steam now. The first good reports of the ice fishing season are starting to come in. Walleyes are biting! North Long, Pelican, and Round are all producing fish. Some nice fish up to 24 inches have been reported, most have been 15-16 inches. Gull and the big part of Pelican have some thin ice but should be better withing a day or two. Most of our lakes have 3-6 inches of ice so please use caution when testing new spots. The active walleyes have been hitting jigging spoons and fatheads. The best jigging spoons have been Scenics Go-Devils or JBs Varmits. Small shiners on set lines have produced a few fish as well. Sunfish and crappies have been active on the smaller lakes. Good Luck this weekend!

Jason,

Sounds like you're the man in the know. I posted the other day re:ice around Craguns. It sounds like maybe Round Lake would be a good option to fish this weekend. I see the access is off 115 on the south side. Can you tell me if it would be worth it to walk out from there and give it a whirl? I looked at the map and I see that 14' hump out from the south end (don't know if it's close to the access). Is that walkable/fishable right now? If so, I'll be paying Sportland a visit on Friday afternoon to get fixed up on bait, etc.. Appreciate any info. Thanks! Dan

Hi Dan, the action in the area is just starting. The last two days anglers have started to venture out on Round. I haven't been out there myself but I've talked to guys that have been walking out from the Northwest side of Round at the small access on Hwy 371. They have been getting out to the first break there. As for the south end, you would have to check the ice but my guess is you can make it out to the first break. There is some really nice structure out from the south access. It is an area I like to hit myself for first ice walleyes. With the colder nights now it will continue to improve everyday. I look forward to seeing you Friday, I really appreciate the business.

Jason,

Do you know if there is access to the west side of the main bay on north long at the resorts on that side.Thanks,Burl.

Hi Burl, you can access the main lake via the public access on the SW shoreline. This access is used primarily in the winter. You get there from the road that enters at the BIR raceway, I believe it is Birchdale Rd. North Long is a great lake for icing nice walleyes. Good Luck out there!

The ice fishing season has gotten off to a great start. We have a very good layer of ice. Most lakes have 5-9 inches of solid ice and the permanent houses are starting to show up. Now that we have ice here in the Nisswa area the fishing reports are pouring in. Most anglers have been walleye fishing and they are doing fairly well. The best results are coming from Pelican, Round, and Gull in 18-26 feet of water.

We haven't seen any trophies yet but the fish have been solid. Jigging spoons tipped with fatheads have produced the best results. Most guys have been fishing the first drops, but as the week progresses they will venture out to some of the hot spots. Nisswa Lake and North Long have been providing some nice

action on panfish and northerns. Evenings have been best for crappies, and the Northerns have bit well on tip-ups and sucker minnows throughout the day. Merry Christmas from your Ice Fishing Headquarters here in Nisswa. Email ([email protected]) or call us for all the latest ice conditions or hot bites in the area. Good Luck this week!

We haven't been catching any monsters but we've had some action. Lots of little guys! We've been fishing Gull the last couple of days. Active fish have been caught from 20-26 feet in most areas. I've been fishing out to 36 with some success. Good reports have also come from Round lake in 20-22 feet. Look for the fishing to get better throughout the week. We just got in a truckload of some huge Golden Shiners for all of you Hawg Hunters out there. We are coming off of the full moon period so Tis the season for the big ones. We keep you posted!

Agreeing with jason that round lake has probably been the best but North Long in the main lake has done very well and Pelican is about the same as Gull in that good quantity but smaller size. The weather and lunar patterns are prime this week for some of the best icefishing of the season. Hope to see all up here and having a great time--Bill

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the rattle wheels! Just got off the North East end of Gull and it was NUTS! I went a little less deep, 16 to 18 feet and caught a bunch of 8 to 14 inchers so many that we had to stop using the wheels b/c we couldn't keep up. I think we will try for something bigger after work tonight. See you soon...

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!

Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.

I must be the only one hunting pheasants.   Went on Saturday for about 2 hours.  Stunning afternoon.  I got a double at the second spot.
