Big Pine Northern action

Recommended Posts

Finaly got out today on Big Pine. Ice was about 3-4 inches. We focused mostly on Northerns and did pretty well was set up in about 4ft out to about 9ft on a real nice cabbage bed you could just see the tops when you looked down the hole still real green cabbage. Set suckers about 6inches from tops of weeds and that was it. caught 2 in the mid 20inch range and had two others get off both of those fish were real nice fish would have loved to have seen them but they were running a long way before swallowing the suckers and we did not get good hook sets on them. I think next time i'll try stinger hooks see if that helps my hook up's. well if anyone else fishes both those Big Pine lakes i would love to chat about how your doing . Good luck to all

Blackjack,

Welcome to FM and thanks for the report.

I've never ice fished the Pines, but I've summer fished it extensively. Despite tageting bass, I've gotten into some big pike. Not a bunch, but some bigguns. I can honestly say I have never caught one under 4lbs. I've witnessed a couple follows that were in the upper teens, and one that I would call a twenty. I don't mind toothies when they're big. grin.gif

We have a place on the lake and are hoping to hit it a few times this winter. 7# Northern is my biggest through the ice up there but I haven't fished the hard water for a number of years. Looking forward to giving it a try. BJD - hope to see you up there!

Hey Loma good to talk to you again yeah i think we can do well on northern all winter as long as we can find those old weed beds we should try lower big pine next time as we know that lake better from open water season.I would love to find those crappies i got into with slipbobbers this summer but i bet their alot harder to catch on the hard water. I know we can pull some walleyes and northerns if we hit it hard. alot eaiser lakes to fish then millacs. If anyone has any pointers to ice those pine lake crappies i would love some hard water tips . Thanks

Never Hit the Pines in the winter time before yesterday. Will try for 'eyes in classic patterns though, so no real solid ideas yet.

I'm interested in giving 'Lake 11' a try ( west of Grindstone )I summer fished that one a few years back when at a wedding & got some good action. I would like to hear others ideas about this lake either here or email me, please.

Thanks in advance!

we did o.k. on walleyes this summer the biggest that i got this summer was about 20 inches we caught many in the 12-14 inch range on wind swept points and in the weeds, cabbage! I will definetely be after them this winter. trying humps and weed beds in the eve. I live in Finlayson so i should get some quality time in on both Pine lakes this winter. This last summer i caught some real nice Large mouth 5-6 pounders and know that there are nice crappies and northerns just a matter of getting out and putting in some quality hours. I will update as i go. good luck to all..
