Fishing gull rock yet?

Recommended Posts

Im heading up to the trailer parked at bablers Dec 16th thru the 19th, was wondering if anybody knows how the ice is around gull rock? If its safe hows the bite? If anybody has any info on this or anything on the ice conditions of the south shore that would be great.

thanks!

yo mammy it sound pretty bleak in that area. They are having a hard time getting the lake to cover and hold the wind keeps screwing things up. At least that is what I heard was happening at longpoint on Sun. which isn't that far away.

As of Saturday night, Arnesen's said there hasn't been a single person fishing out there. They had about 6 inches north of the harbor but it got thinner after that. They were planning to haul houses out on Sunday and can't believe that happened. Before the wind, the ice at Twin Islands was a complete mess they said.

Burkmyster,

Whats up?

I can't thank you enough for letting us use the trailer! We were having trouble finding somewhere to stay that was close to the big pond. I heard arnesons has there permys out to gull rock now, have you guys been out there during early ice? I'd like to try fishing there first if it is safe, rather than driving over to pine island every day.

Any info helpfull as I havent been on that side of the lake this early. I'll leave some $ for propane and promise not to trash the place. Thanks again

Later,

BK

Yo Mammy,

Stopped by Rocky Point yesterday, and to my amazement I saw open water. Right in front of Arnesen's a nice crack blew open about 100 - 200 yds across and runs NW suposedly to Buffalo Point. Arnesen's has about 15 - 20 houses out that they put out a couple of days before the wind Tuesday night (one of the guys there said fishing had been good). The wind is blowing 20-30 out of the NW today so the ice may have shifted today. I also stopped by Long Point and the ice is a mess there as well. Some spots have 8-10" and then other spot 4". So if you go that way be careful. Of course, with a forecast of -24 for Saturday night will help a lot.

Good luck and see you on the water.

We were planning on going out of Rocky Point on Sat-Sun, any new news on ice conditions in the area?

-BK: Your definitely welcome...it doesn't get used enough. Have fun! When in doubt fish by the rock pile if you can, find 26 ft and bounce the bottom with a fat head and a gold jig or Angel Eye. It's pretty hard not to catch fish on Lac Du Bios in Dec!

-Ret-ro: 3 of us are leaving after work on the 29th and returning on the 2nd. Happy New Years! I've got room for 1 maybe 2 more. R U Interested? I didn't get the cat back from the shop till spring. It's "supposed" to be runnin' like a champ. Also, when are you going to sell me your Eskimo?

-cc: keep the beer cold, I may hold you to that offer. Ours is big white one that's probably 4 or 5 in on the right...I'll extend you the same offer.

Would love to but I am going up the next week end.

Thanks for the offer. Going to keep the polar for one more year. Good luck up there. You'll have to let me know how you do.

Talked to Dick Babler yesterday, he isn't letting the public on at his access yet. He said he was going to check ice today.

Fine! I see how you are. I'll buy it next year then...at a reduced price. grin.gif

Consider Jan 11-12 or 25-26 as alternative dates when we can fish the big pond together. Are you taking the big trailer when you go?

LDB are you talking about Feb, those dates fall on Tue/Wed in Jan. Possibly for Feb. We are taking the 8x16 and heading straight for the woods now that the ice is coming fast.

No, not Feb. I was drunk when I looked at my calendar. Jan 15-16 or 29-30. I'm leaning towards 29-30 but maybe I'll do both.

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Falls gone Gim, time to move to ice fishin!!👍

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
