Zipple Bay

Recommended Posts

Any reports out of the Zipple Bay Area? Would like to go fishing Wednesday but not if I can only get out to 12 feet of water! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wobbler,

Hey, let me know how you do if you get out. We may be heading up to Zipple this weekend.

There was much success had by my group as well as Rick and the Ice Leaders group that all fished out of Zippel this past weekend. 12-15 ft. was all the farther one could venture out due to a huge crack that had yet to heal. Mostly eyes with a few sauger, pike and burbot mixed in. I would definitley head up again if I had the chance. We did get to watch the resort's scout and trailer go thru the ice on Saturday so the ice is not even close to being stable, but chances are there to be taken. Good luck!!

Yep, we did pretty well up there this past weekend. Rick and I joined up with the Hillbilly to the Bone Guide Service and Lucky Bait for a day out on the ice. We went out as far as the big crack and fished just inside of it about 15 yards. About 13 feet of water or so. Gold Custom Jigs and Spins Slender spoons tipped with a minnow head worked pretty good, as did glow red in both jigging spoons and demons.

HeavyD,

Where were you fishing, I must have missed ya? Did you stay at Zipple Bay? Glad to hear you had success as well. The wind picked up yesterday and we took off in the morning.

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

When you come out of Zipple Bay towards the big lake the crack is about 400 or so yards out...

Norm,

We decided to head up to LOW around 6pm on friday evening, so it was basically just pack up and go. We left Owatonna around 7:30pm or so. We stopped in Grand Rapids and didn't even make it to the lake until around 5:30am. Everything was short notice. We'll have to get together this winter though...

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

Hummm... You're odds are better if you run the gas tank below 1/2 and mount load levelers on the sides. shocked.gif

Seriously, if you do, drill & measure along the way !!

Good luck.

I am going up there on the 26th and we plan on just running ATV's and I think that might be hairy. I think the A-hole might be pretty tight while fishing up there.

I am guess that but then you will be fine to take a truck out. Keep your eyes open here people will let you know. It has been cold out there. I see Baudette had a low of 0 last night. Ice can grow a inch a day with those conditions. I am not sure if you will be able to get out of place like long point but I would think that Adrian's, and Zipple areas would be ready by then.

Thanks for the reports. I am still trying to decide to go or not. Were you guys able to wheeler to wear you went? My boss was up there yesterday and did pretty good right away in the morning.

I called the resort and they are checking ice today but unless you stay at the resort they are not letting ATV's go out yet. Hopefully, later this week they will. As of now they will be transporting people out to their houses.

We took a wheeler out of Zipple Bay, but I don't know what the ice is like since they wind came through.

Yep, the early morning bite is probably the best. Get out there right before sunrise and be ready to catch some fish. The fish also bit pretty good throughout the entire day too...

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

My guess is I will be fishing there on Thursday. I bought a new house and want to use it really bad. I can't wait to see that first fish on the vex smack the buckshot rattle or see the slow sink of the ice buster bobber and set the hook!

Yeah I know you are! I have never heard of such a display! I have really outfished people somedays and totally been outfished others but I have never smelled all the way home like you did! 35-0! OUCH!!!! 5 to 1; 10 to 1; not 35-0!!!!

Hey Matt, we were the 2 portables just inside of you from the crack (one otter and one guide) and ran into your group in the lodge after we all had been in the cups for quite a few hours. I only recognized you all once you were leaving. Consider yourselves lucky wink.gif

I agree with you that the morning bite was better than the evening, but we were able to have pretty consistent action throughout the day with literally hundreds of 5-10 inch eyes making their rounds. I would just keep putting on bigger minnows and keep watching my ice buster go down. On Friday it seemed the pike were making the rounds pretty consistently with one 27 incher making it out of the hole and I broke off one that seemed bigger than that just below the ice.

Hope everyone continues to be safe up there!! After watching that transport go down, I sure didn't feel safe laugh.gif

Wobbler,

I really have to believe that auger gas on the hands had to be the culprit. I don't doubt that Lip is by far a more superior angler than I, but that was a dirty one he gave me on the ice that day. You would think that a blind squirell would eventually find a nut!

High Life,

I carry a box of latex gloves under the seat of my widetrack. I always put them on prior to touching my auger.

Gas on the hands will kill your day. Then smash up a couple of shiners in your hands, and you are good to go for the day.

I have a feeling you are going to hear about this one for a while with that crew you run with. Get em next time!

High Life,

Lip Ripper is a superior fisherman but I always thought you were too! Lip Ripper outfishes everyone usually but 35-0 is unheard of! At least I hung with him a few times or maybe even beat him once or twice but 35-0 is unreal! There are some suicide fish out there because I have seen Tony catch a few but nothing for you! What were you using a fouled out gas plug with treble hooks? Heck even Chris M. that one day at 16 mile caught a few while Lip Ripper and I slaughtered them a few years back!

It was the spicy garlic venison sausage that I rubbed on the Buckshot after it marinated in the Miller Lite for a while. Works for me.

I thought the only sausage out there was his finger after he slammed it in the door. Rumor has it that Mrs. High Life has never seen something so swollen!

Don't give her any ideas Wobbler, she may try to slam my dead stick in the shower door to "increase the swelling"

WT,

I usually have some fisherman's soap in my truck, but it being the first trip out, I'm amazed that I remembered my boots. One out of the two sleds we brought started, it took about 30 minutes of tinkering to get the auger to start, and to top it all off we decided to stick it out "15 more minutes" and my brother-in-law (from ND) got pinched for failing to display his house license as we were packing up. At least we stayed dry!

With that kind of luck, it almost sounds like Lip Ripper made a trip to the Darkside before he started fishing. It's the only explanation in my swollen eyes.

He made it up to Strathcona before I had to take the helm. It was very black the night before. Saturday was a little dim as well. So I had that going for me......which was nice.

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.
    • SkunkedAgain
Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Falls gone Gim, time to move to ice fishin!!👍

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
