Morris Point

Recommended Posts

I'm hearing rumors with this wind the ice is gone at Morris Point and that some or all of the permanent houses are gone.

Again just trying to confirm rumors.

That doesn't sound good. Where did you hear it? I realize it was miserable out there today but I would love a report if anyone had big enough eggs to be out there tonight.

I cant confirm or deny that, however i did call Morris around 1:30 today, and he said the ice is fine, and he thought it would continue to be fine, where did you hear this from?

This was from someone that lives at birch beach. Hansel it seems you sure spend alot of time on the phone with the resorts. again I'm hearing this second maybe even third hand.

na, not really, only when i hear stuff like this, cause they live there, unlike you and me who live in Central MN. And another reason is because they dont like to be called cause im sure they get pestered a lot. all i can say is that i hope they are wrong.

Me and about 14 other guys fished Morris Point Fri and Sat. We've never had such terrible fishing in all the years we've ice-fished LOW. One guy got a 25" and other than that only a couple 14's that we could probably count on one hand. Can't complain about the 25" though. The ice has a big crack about a 1/4 mile straight out from Morris Point resort its about 18" wide. We just drove straight across it on the wheelers with no problems-looked pretty scary though. I don't know if the high winds opened it up any more on Sunday. The ice was fine until you got out past the crack, then the ice was terrible, it had big sheets of ice sticking out everywhere, very slow going when your pulling a portable. When you drilled a hole you had to keep scooping ice out for about 10 minutes, it just kept coming up the hole. Bring a good ice scoop and reach way down in the hole and make sure theres no hidden sheets of ice around the bottom of the hole-instant line cutters we called 'em. I heard that people were doing far better over by Pine Island, but also heard that you need to know what your doing because the ice isn't as good over there. I heard of wheelers going through the ice but I also saw some Suzuki Samurai's driving across 4 mile bay pulling trailers full of people behind so they must know where their going. Wouldn't be a bad idea to wait and follow one of those guys out. I think i'll wait until I hear of good fishing and do a spur of the moment trip before I make any sure plans too far in advance. That doesn't always work either. Good luck to any of you who have a trip lined up soon. Last year around this same time we HAMMERED the fish!! 300 fish, 6 guys, 2 days of fishing!!!!! I got spoiloed last year!! Still a beleiver in early ice though.

Just got back from Low, went out of morris point, then headed over towards pine Island. -5 degrees when we left this morning, it was pretty much easy going all the way there. We had two houses in our group, 1 with 1 guy and the other with 3. The 3 man house started slow but ended up with around 75-90 fish and the guy by himself was hot all day and must have caught around 125. We had 13" ice, it was sooooo good I'm heading back wed and thur.

Where do you enter Lake of the woods from Morris Point? I have always gone out from Adrians But due to conditions I was wondering about going out From Morris Point. Thanks

Do you go out through Morris Point Resort? We too are heading up this weekend for the first time ever. We want to get in on the good action, but more importantly, stay dry on TOP of the ice!

Yepper, stop at the resort and talk with Al. Their access is right there, fish cleaning facilities as well. I've been fishing out of there since last wednesday and the ice is good, so is the fishing. Friday evening fishing in 10fow saw lots of action as well as some dandy fish caught.

Thanks for the info Fisky. Do you think I'll be able to get by with my 4lb. perch line, or should I be respooling with 6 or 8lb.?

I would respool you never know when you are going to tie into a good eye or pike and nothing worst than loosing a big one to too light of line. I myself never hit lake of the woods without Power Pro 10(test)/2(diameter) on all my setups.

b-o-m, I myself usually bring 4 rods onto the ice, all spooled with mono.... 1 with 4#, 1 with 6#, 1 with 8#, and 1 with 10#. I use them all and it depends on what type and size of lure I'm using as to which one I grab, not so much the size of the fish I'm hoping or planning on catching!

Rocky, I wandered down a ways to the east toward the washout where it's a bit shallower for the given distance off of shore as compared to straight out. Don't go too far!

Yoe Todd how goes it. I've only fished around Morris and Graceton so far. Ran into a guy in Pamida and he told me Arnesons had a few huts out, and he'd heard the bite was good. I'd imagine their along the S shore there back out to the west??? Second hand info so you may wanna call Paul or one of them folks to confirm this.

Some pretty good fishing on the early ice out to the east ya know.....Go during the week to avoid the southerners! I'll be out there again tomorrow PM.

Let us know when things are a go out your way eh!

Take care.

Kettle,  just how much snow is on the ground up there??   Looking like some good ice making temps up there the next 3 nights . 3 consecutive nights  below 0. 2 double digits below

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.
