I will be coming up for a camping/fishing trip during the week at the end of June. Never fished Mille Lac before. I don't have the biggest boat so I know I need to be aware of the wind......can anyone give me any help hints I should be aware of.....places to concentrate.....just was kinda hoping for a heads up if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance!

flag- mud flats if you are staying close enough and you think your boat will handle it. Traditionally that time will still be ok, but starting to slowing down. May be crawlers or leeches or plugs.

If your staying at Kathio and you have a small boat there is still some great fishing form indian point to spirit island and along the west shore that time of year. Some of the launches fish there all year and do well.

flag- From Kathio you have a haul to the popular mud flats(best guess 7-8 miles to the nearest mud flat which would be 7mile, or nine mile, once you get that far there are many flats within a mile or two that you can fish, with the right day it is no big deal to drive out. Otherwise you can fish around the hole at vineland bay or a few of the breaks on the outskirts of the bay(This bay can be great and contains every type of structure from rubble, to large rock, to weeds,to gravel to sand). You also have a few reefs fairly close(rocky, andersons) and yes Indian Pt. might be good or the deep gravel tip might be working especially at sundown. Duanes flat in shah-bush bay might be a good bet it contains a really nice transition from mud to rocks as you get on top of the south end. Night fishing will be open by then and the area around spirit island or the tip of Indian can be ok if you are in for an adventure.

Night Fishing Open???? I don't fish Mille Lacs usually until fall, but fish perch during the day and eyes at night. What's the deal with the Night fishing being closed? I was planning on some spring trips up there to do some night fishing. Someone let me know so I don't go up there and find out I have to spend the nights at the bar wink.gif

Or talk to Derrek Johnston with Mille Lacs Area Guide Service. A day on the water with Derrek may be a great way to start.

Thanks guys,
i'm on a limited budget so I don't know if I'd be able to afford a guide. i'll just be thankful I get to go...catching fish will be a bonus. Thanks for the answers though!

Flagup:
It's been a long time since I've stayed at Kathio but when I did we used to fish the spillway in the park where the Rum river comes out of Lake Okeechi.BIG pike, sunfish, and an occasional walleye or two. Try it out.

Flag,

If wind allows, I would hit Shermans Flat. It's the closest mud flat from the public landing on the SW side of the lake.

The best thing to do is get the Walleye Whiffer II and look it over. If you need some locations, shoot me an e-mail and I will send you some GPS coordinates.

Thanks JBK!

Gotta love those big pike! I'll definitely try it out. Wherever I decide I know I don't want to stray too far from shore!
Spillway by Kathio....thanks!

What'd ya use for bait? artificial or live bait?

Flagup how big of a boat do you have?It is also a good idea to have a GPS on ML as a lot of structure is out from shore. If you have any questions you can email me at [email protected] I have a place on the east side of the lake and am up there every weekend.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

MN DNR posted April 13 as Ice out date for Vermilion

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
