New stealth (2 hp) auger


JIGLFIN

Question

Anyone question why the start rope handle, intersects

the throttle lever??? (scraped knuckles)???

Or why the (ultra fine print) in the owners manual???

If the position the recoil is pointing is a problem for you. I think you can remove the 4 screws on top and turn the recoil assembly 90 so it will face the other way then reinstall the screws.

Yep you can turn it without any problem. Like Ed said loosen the 4 screw and turn it.

Any "motor Heads" around today?

What's your thoughts,on the sudden need,for

a compression release on the (2HP) motor?

I'm not at all a "MOTORHEAD",but my guess to this is a change in the muffler design thus increasing the compression of the engine.

The new units all meet 2006 EPA standards. To do that they had to increase the compression. The 2 hp units are putting out 2.5 hp this year.

I noticed something had changed, involving the muffler,

in fact my initial thought was, that the exaust outlet

had been moved, upon closer inspection, I noticed the

single .250 or smaller hole off to the rh side. makes

one wonder how all the exhaust can excape that small

opening? But one can sure appreciate the quite.

Wasn't aware of what the changes involved, but did notice

the extra effort required to pull the motor over, and the

tendency to pull the rewind out of my hand,

(need to practice opening the compression release)

each time I pull the start rope.

So they increased the HP, didn't realize there was more

than 2 pony's under that "canary yellow" cowl, very interesting!

I had talked to the Strikemaster rep at the Ice Show and he told me the change in the muffler created more backpressure,which also upped the HP 1/3 more which is around a 1/2 HP.That is the same thing I had noticed about the quiet sound on the newer model Tecumsech engine.

So if I read this right the new Jiffy Stealth would also has the 2/2.5 hp this year to meet the new EPA standerds?

If so, that just adds a bit more snoose to handle the 9" all that much better.

Everyone anchored in? The wind up here's tryin to

peel the antenna off my house!

Just wanted to mention, I was out in -10 temps today

to test the starter on that new yellow unit. Seven

pulls this time, gettin better!

Ed; If I'm hearin you correctly, you'v got one of these

yellow units also. You found enough ice to challenge it yet?

Say, whats your thought on the clutch set-up?

If you ease the throttle down, do you hear

something that sounds ball bearings in a tin can

and than a noticable "bang" when the clutch engages?

Any thoughts on clutch or gear case life?

Over the years, I have never replaced a drive or a clutch in a Jiffy. One recoil rope was the extent of my service needs on three Jiffy augers. I have never replaced a set of Jiffy blades, or needed to. The Jiffy blades are easy to maintain so I have always done it myself. No need to own or to carry spare blades on a Jiffy in my experience.

I have owned one StikeMaster and I just had the clutch replaced after a year of use. The clutch locked up tight with broken springs. I also replaced the blades because they were worn very badly. I am just not any good at sharpening swept blades so replacing them was my smartest option. In my experience they need a lot of maintenance to stay sharp and a second set on hand is necessary. It will cut much as if it did when new for it's new owner. I would also like to say that StrikeMasters service department is very good and fast.

As for the gearbox and drive, Stealth takes 1st place through design technology. New Power Train enhancement features Cryogenic bearings with state of the art low temperature lubricants that will remain mobile at -65°F and provide complete lubrication. These same bearings are used in the aircraft industry today. The Stealth has precision Rolled Gears, which have a very high surface finish and tighter grain structure than that of the industry standards. The case uses mechanical Grade PTFE Thrust Washer reducing friction and resulting in more power to the cutting head.

These enhancements to the Power Train deliver 18% more power to the Stealth Cutting Technology. The factory lubricated, maintenance-free gearbox features a diecast alloy gear case, heavy duty bearings, and heat-treated steel gears. The power head is mated to the automatically engaging clutch; the Jiffy gearbox provides powerful, smooth, and controlled ice drilling.

Lots of good stuff in a tuff well built and low maintance package, that is why I choose a Jiffy. I picked up another new Jiffy Stealth today, a 3 HP 9" model. Now I have 2 Jiffys to serve our on ice needs, the other is a 2 HP 8". I have high confidence in the Stealth system and technology. I feel it is on the top of the game on the ice today.

I see you are from lovely little Horace ND. My brother "Jaybird" lived there for a number of years, don't know if you fellow's met, but he's a hardwater guru, from years gone. He reciently purchased some acres and moved over Hawley MN. way.

Thank's for all the premo info. sounds like one has nothing

to fear with all the advanced technology goin into this unit.

I also have owned a small fleet of augers over the last 30 +

years of hardwater fishin, but none with a clutch that engaged quite like this one!

Got another one for someone. After ownin a couple model 30's, I finally learned how to enjoy startin one and it went like this - open the tank vent, prime till fuel appears at the carb. inlet, (leave the choke open) lean the carb. up slightly, pull once or twice and it's runnin, (keep your thumb near the primer till it idles smoothley). Simple aye.

Any of you 2HP owners, open the tank vent, put the choke

on and pull till your elbow heats up? 7 to 10 pulls and

wondered why? or where is the primer???

I have owned Tecumsech 2HP engines for a few years and have Never had any need for a primer!I really do not see any reason on the 2HP motor that it would be necessary to have a primer to make the engine run?1-3 pulls at the most and it's started!I usually count the pulls the Jiffy 3HP owners when I see them,and it is usually quite a few,and then the warm up time. confused.gif

A couple short strokes on the rope on the 2 hp followed by a full pull usually does the trick for me.

The 3 HP is Prime and pull and it then needs about 20-30 seconds to warm up and your ready to lets the chips fly. If you flood them you will be pulling tell the plug airs out. I can't say I have had much problem with either auger for starting as long as the fuel and the plug is up to snuff.

I just got a 2hp stealth- I also think it would be better for the recoil cord tobe on the other side of the auger. Looking at the top of the auger it looks like if i took the 3 screws out and turned the top- the screw holes would not line up any more??? The top looks like all one piece to me. Has any one actually turned the top on a 2hp stealth. The throttle lever does get in the way and also would work better as far as getting at the choke while starting- It does not look to me like it can be turned???? any help would be appreciated?????????????????

ed, or anybody else for that matter, any experience with the nils master augers?

i saw the video, and i know the other auger in the video could have had dul blades, but i checked them out at the ice fishing show, and i was very impressed with what i saw.

they are a little on the expensive side, but when you drill as many holes as me in a season, it is not hard to justify having something that works as good as this seems to, and have less hassles or worries.

one thing that did concern me was the service, as there are not many dealers in the area.

i still believe i will have one next season at the latest.

kevfish your right. On closer look the new cover it does not have the 4-screw recoil assembly on top, and I do not think it can be turned as I previous stated...I was wrong. I had it pictured in my head that it was still like the chainsaw recoil. I should have marched out to the garage and look before I opened my big mouth. My bad..sorry guys.

From the feedback I get the reason they pointed the recoil that way was because of the new Ice House handle and motor configuration. Safety was another as they want the exhaust pointed away from you. Yet with the way they prime and start now you do not really need to hold the throttle open tell it is ready to drill.

I will suggest to Jiffy that they consider changing the cover to allow for pointing the recoil either way. It would be handy for folks who prefer the apposing set-up.

Personally I have been an advocate they try a twist throttle like on a motorcycle and build it into the wraparound handle. I think that would be the handiest system yet.

Speaking of spendy ice augers....the system Husqvarna has is a nice rig too. Check that out once. I would like to test one of them for a season once.

      Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

      just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

      Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

      Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

      I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

      Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

      is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

      It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
