I was wondering when the best ice fishing for crappies up there is. I live in the cities and dont want to drive 4 hours to catch a few. i want to be there when the best action is. Any suggestions on what resort to go out of? How deep of water do i want to fish?

I am heading up to red tomorrow and was wondering if we can drive the wheelers out. Also my old man has a sled is there enough snow to use that. Also how far are people going out? Is the bite going good right now? Thanks for any info. Kid

The fishing has been pretty spotty so far, there is 6-7 inches of ice on our trail out from West Wind. We have been letting ATV's and sleds go out about 3.5 miles.

eyecatcher, the bite can happen anytime, however, it seems later in the winter say jan through march is a good stretch.

Good Luck! WestWind and Hillmans both have plowed/marked roads. Thier located on the east side of the lake in Waskish.

Ninetoe,

Congrats!!! How is Ma T and the new one? Hope to see you all soon.

The hot bite usually always happens two days before you get there. wink.gif Just kidding - Red is usually best right at dusk.

Keep Smiling.

Glad to hear that everyone is doing well Ninetoe! I notice you are calling him Jeremiah....what happened to Pikey? Good luck this weekend. I will have to wait until after the new year before I get up there.

Well I pushed the issue of Pike for a first name as far as it would go. It got kinda ugly around the homestead,,,I got tired of sleepin in the garage:). So its Jeremiah Pike-Lorn.

We got 7 between 3:00 and 6:30 last night. We were fishing in about 12-14' using a red glow Angel Eye spoon. That was about all we seen on the vex too.

There is always a hot bite on Red. It's just a matter of how much work you want to do to find fish. I've been there before and didn't have to move once to limit out. The key is to stay away from crouds(harder said then done but it's true). There isn't any structure to the lake so the fish are always on the move its just a matter of getting on top of them.

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
