Crappie Jigs

If I could only bring three jigs with me to Red Lake they would be these.

1. The Custom Jigs and Spins Shrimpo in glow brite/pink.

shrimpoGB15.gif

2. Glow Red Phelps Tick Jig in size 4 on a deadstick or under an Ice Buster.

3. Custom Jigs and Spins Mega Demon in blue glow, size 6.

the only thing i would change is the phelps tick would also be in blue glow, and all my hooks are number four for them big slabs, unless they run out at the bait shop. i just buy them by the card.

Jiggle, I know you guys slap 'em on the Ticks. I had to choose three, if I had more room to go I would have added blue ticks, red snakes, red glow hooks, on and on and on...

Give me a call when you get a chance today!

I don't know if there is a trend here but Red & Blue glow are awesome! Phelps Tackle products seem to have a good reputation on URL also.

For me:

1- Phelps Glow Hooks (Red)

2- Phelps Tick Jig (Red)

3- Scenic Tackle 1/8 oz. Go-Devil (Red)

I typically jig the Go-Devil and deadstick the glow hook or tick jig with a minnow. If glow red isn't doing it, I'll go with the blue. If that isn't working, I move and move again.

I've got some other stuff to try this winter but that'll do it for me a lot of the time.

At least one line in the house always has a Phelps Glow tube/hook on a deadstick. Unless it is going real good change colors every 15 minutes

I notice the Crappies come through in groups, and may keep moving on if nothing is there to get their undies in a bunch, so I keep another rod next to the hole I am jigging. That way, when I pull up the slab-o-caster, I can let it flop on the ice while getting back down to the fish beneath my feet with the other rod before they swim away.

Now I know that I may not be an Upper Red Lake "goo-roo" (yeah, so I spelled it wrong...whoop-ee-doo)but I think I have had some success on the lake.

Oh...nevermind....That is all credited to kelly-p's phenomenal job of putting me on fish.

Thanks kelly-p!!!!

Have a nice day.

I use red colors on Red. Now that you guys mention it, I will pick up some blue. I have had some good success with gold during the day, and with purple at night as well. Perhaps the purple and blue look similar to the Crappies.

But maybe not.

Actually, probably not. At this point, I am certain I am wrong. Fish don't blink. But they do flinch.

I think that if we went out into

[Note from whomever: We don't care what you think UJ]

Well that wasn't very nice.

A hello to Halad, if he reads this...and his pup too.

By the way, have a nice day!

jigsticker, somehow after reading your post I started to imagine you scattering your Cheerios all around the room to see what colored spoon worked best to scoop them back up. grin.gif I just hope you didn't poor the milk out too. wink.gif

Nope, milk stayed in the fridge, where it belongs.

And nope, I wasn't sippin' Grand Dad's cough syrup; I save that for the specialist of special occasions.

We'll see, from sea to shining sea.

Gentlemen, sometimes I am surprised the lake freezes over at all with the hot air swirling around up there. Well, besides the facts about the Ticks, Snakes, and Glow Hooks. They do work well! I am hoping to do some more fishing up there this year, I make the trip too many times without taking time to wet a line, inside or out. Looking forward to another good winter, hopefully we get some colder weather soon. Thanks all. Remember, It Helps to Use...

Say MJP how about some Cheerios in bright blue glow???? I think the crappies would love them and also then halad could sprinkle them along as he goes fishing and then follow them back home again later. wink.gif Cann't use red cuz then he would think it was stop lights and sit there till the sun came up. grin.gif

I like Angel Eyes for the aggresive fish. It reduces lost fish with the bigger hook. The Go Devil works well with the finiky fish and tipped with a minnow head .

Of course the tick jig is a good weapon too! smile.gif

Angel eyes were our best last year. Pink and orange was the best colors. Did good on buckshot spoons too Seemed like you could call them in with the buckshot and if they didnt like it just had to show them a angel eye or devil and you were in like flin.

Mmmm... Glow Blue cheerios. Not a bad idea. I think I will paint those the same time I paint your houses Glow Red. Well, ok maybe not. Although, they would be easy to find. Hope things are going well for everyone. Think cold. We need some ice. I want to go fishing, and not in the boat. Happy Holidays all. By the way Matt B., it does Help to Use... Matt Phelps. You are probably right, united, it will be more time for fishing. That is the good thing. The other good thing is that I didn't lose the Glow Tubes. They will be with me forever, along with my other ancient chinese secrets.

MJP,

Just placed an order for a selection of "the good stuff" yesterday. Will be bringing my F-I-L up for his first Red Lake adventure the 7th of Jan. and needed to get him set up with a little more than his traditional "gold hook and a minnow" for crappies. Save a couple cold ones for us cool.gif

When you're father in law is not looking, just slip one of Phelps glow tubes over the hook and you'll be good to go! wink.gif

Hanson,

My thoughts exactly wink.gif I got a pack of both red and blue glowtubes just for that purpose. He has a cabin on a small lake in WI that is loaded with small crap's, and thinks that the only bait he ever needs to use is a long shank gold hook and minnow. So now he'll have a few tick jigs, glow tubes etc to help him "diversify" his offerings. Now if i can only get him to try an icebuster bobber grin.gif

Last winter I bought some jigs at Hillman's that had some kind of glow that lasted longer than anything else I have ever seen. I have not found these jigs anywhere else and I am not one for remembering all these names you guys throw around. I just look for size/shape of hook and basic configuration with RED glow. I should really pay more attention to the names but I keep a variety and switch around till something works. I do believe jigs make a difference at times and glow is great. Does anyone know about these long glowing jigs I am talking about? I am not kidding, you put them down the hole and haul them up 15 minutes later and they are still pretty bright. They were kind dull pink in daylight before you give them the laser shot. Also, I have never heard the term "deadstick". Is that a short rod and reel combo? Thanks for any answers. I am leaving for LOW thursday AM. Let the frenzy begin.

Mjen, the term deadstick is when you leave your lure motionless for a period of time. Ie. not regularly jigging your lure or jig. As far as the jigs, knowing the volume of our jigs Hillmans went through last year they were most liklely the Phelps Tick or Snake jig. If they have a sort of rubbery coat of paint and glow to beat the band, they are. You can get those here soon, or Gander Mtn near you in Mtka or Cabin Fever in Victoria, or again up north about anywhere. Glad you like them.

  • 'we have more fun' FishingMN Creators

They also may have been the Glow Devil or Custom Jigs Demon which do have long lasting glow red.

They are dynamite lures for URL Crappies. Angel Eye Jrs are also must haves.

Thanks for the info. I do believe they were a Phelps. We used them this weekend on LOW and they worked great on the walleyes. We noticed they have a sulfur smell and no other glow jigs I have smell that way.

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.
