How to sharpen Lazer auger

Just bought my son the Lazer auger at Dick's. My question is- how does he keep it sharp? Is there something I need to buy so that he can sharpen it? Thanks for any help. Paul F B

Had mine for 4 years and still using the same blades.my understanding is there are resharpened blades you can swap for or buy new$$ but my understanding is to do-it-yourself is a tough job without the right equipment. LOL

I've done dozens of them using a table top 1" belt sander with 320 grit and LIGHTLY touching up the blades. A good, fine grit finishing hone will help get a keen edge. It does take a steady hand and try to match the contours closely. Only touch up the surface that shows grinding marks on, most blades are smooth on one side. Even so, buy a set of spare blades. If you have trouble, you could send the dull ones in to the manufacturer if any local sharpening shops can't do them, they are tricky to do right. Always try them out first before taking a long trip, see how they cut.

I've never even attempted to resharpen my Lazer blades. That is one thing where a chipper style blade may hold an advantage.

Anyway, most places that sell Strikemaster will also carry the replacement blades, extensions, blade covers & bungees, gas caps, etc. I finally replaced my metal cap with a plastic one. I went through 3 metal caps, about 1 1/2 a yr since I bought my auger.

Strikemaster does have a blade exchange. Check their website or give them a call. I bought one new set and sent in my old set for an exchange. I'll always have a spare set of sharp blades and then I just rotate them.

Thanks Chris; I should have included this in my original post but what I am talking about is a hand auger. Is it possible to get extra blades for these or do you sharpen them? Sorry about the confusion guys. Paul F B

Yeah, they sell replacement blades for the hand auger, they also do a blade exchange on them too. I also noticed on their website that they sell a sharpening 'tool' for hand auger lazer blades only. Just another option for ya.

2085, If you look in Strikemasters site where the blades are you'll see the sharpener. I've haven't used it so I couldn't say how well it works.

If you go into the On-Line Store section and click on auger blades, the sharpeners will be in the left hand column. I believe there were 2 different styles shown.

I've used the hand sharpener they sell and it did not work well. Just wear thick leather gloves when messing with these blades!!

I found a guy near home that professionally sharpened all sorts of tools, blades, etc.. and he re-sharpened my Lazer blades. My original blades lasted 4+ years and a lot of holes!!

Maybe I should buy a blade guard, are they worth the 14.95?

You should always have a blade guard. Saves in cuts, cut house fabric and chipping blades. Always cover them even if ya just tie some leather over them.
